NORTH CANTON: After 38 years on the Malone University campus, the Weaver Child Development Center is relocating to Fieldcrest of North Canton.
Fieldcrest, a 50-acre tract on Easthill Street, was once the dairy farm of W.H. Hoover Sr., son of Hoover Co. founder W.H. “Boss” Hoover.
“It’s not uncommon for our classes to go outside to learn about math, language and science. Our program meshes perfectly with Fieldcrest’s idyllic setting,” said Susie Clark-Maioriello, director of Weaver CDC. “We believe children learn best from experiences, not work sheets.”
Clark-Maioriello describes Weaver as a Reggio-inspired Christian school.
Reggio Emilia, a city in Italy known for its unique approach to education, stresses that children learn more effectively in a sensory-rich environment.
Weaver is the only Reggio-inspired Christian preschool and primary school in the area and among only a handful in the state, Clark-Maioriello said.
Approximately 100 students from age 2 through third grade attend Weaver.
The center also serves as a setting for education majors from Malone, Walsh, Stark State, Kent State’s Stark campus and other local colleges to gain teaching experience.
For Fieldcrest owner Sally Morse Dale, the relocation of Weaver fulfills a long-deferred dream.
Eight years ago, Dale’s plan for a Montessori school at Fieldcrest fell through. The west barn on the property, at that time converted for the proposed Montessori school, is good to go for Weaver’s use, she said.
“The play areas are still here, and we now have horses,” she said. “The Weaver CDC approached us, and we are excited to have them. I am more than happy to run the business, and they can run the school.’
“It is a great fit,” said Dale, who is CEO of the M.K. Morse Co. of Canton.
Registration for fall classes, which will be held in the new location, is now open.
Weaver Child Development Center will host an open house from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at its current location, in the Johnson Center on the Malone University campus, 2600 Cleveland Ave. NW, Canton. Reservations are required.
