A familiar name in Akron’s nonprofit community has taken the top post at the International Institute.
Elaine Woloshyn, who was founding president and CEO of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, will replace Debbie May-Johnson as executive director.
May-Johnson is the new executive director of the Cleveland Eye Bank.
For almost 100 years, the International Institute has provided comprehensive services to foreign-born residents in Akron and Summit County. It also has been part of the United States Refugee Resettlement Program since 1975.
“I’m really passionate about the mission of the International Institute,” Woloshyn said. “We relocate folks who are refugees and can’t return to their home, and we help them find jobs and homes and learn English and make a new life here as Americans.”
Woloshyn is well known in the Akron area for founding the Center for Nonprofit Excellence more than a decade ago. That agency helps other organizations raise money, write proposals, develop budgets and work with volunteers, and is an executive search firm for some of the 1,700 nonprofits in the Greater Akron area.
She also previously ran Info Line Inc., is a fellow at the Center for Nonprofit Policy and Practice at the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, and most recently had a private consulting business in nonprofit management.
“Elaine’s experience as a nonprofit executive and her commitment to the mission of the International Institute combine to make her a skilled and competent leader for the [institute],” said Pam Hickson-Stevenson, president of the board of directors. “Her expertise and knowledge will be invaluable as we plan to move into our second century of service to new Americans in our community.”
Woloshyn will direct the International Institute’s efforts to help newly arrived refugees integrate into the community and promote public awareness of the value of ethnic diversity, a news release said.
Woloshyn lives in Stow with her husband, Richard Stahl.
