Man shot by Columbus police avoids jail

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: A 52-year-old man who was shot by Columbus police officers after driving his car at one of them won’t go to jail.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Douglas Wiegand was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation. He could go to prison for eight years if he violates it.

Wiegand pleaded guilty in October to one count each of attempted felonious assault and attempted failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer.

Police say Wiegand was being sought as a drunken-driving suspect on July 7, 2012. Two officers fired at him when he drove his car at one of them.

He was shot once. He said the bullet had nicked his liver and collapsed a lung. A bystander was also shot.
