Cook holds onto Akron judge seat after recount

Beacon Journal staff report

Katarina Cook will remain an Akron Municipal Court judge.

A recount by the Summit County elections board showed Cook beating Magistrate Jon Oldham by 13,888 to 13,873, a difference of 15 votes.

The elections board will meet Monday to certify the results in this and three other close races that were separated by 0.5 percent or less, triggering automatic recounts. None of the outcomes changed.

Unofficial election night results tipped the judge race in Oldham’s favor, but the race flipped to Cook after provisional ballots and additional mail-in absentee ballots were added.

The recount in the judge race included two ballots that weren’t included in the initial count, but were discovered during the recount process. Board employees also had to remake two damaged ballots for the recount that were already in the unofficial count.
