Genetic bill passes
People learning through genetic testing that they might be susceptible to devastating diseases wouldn't also have to worry about losing their jobs or their health insurance under anti-discrimination legislation the Senate passed Thursday. The 95-0 Senate vote sends the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act back to the House. President Bush supports the legislation.
In other action:
• The House, defying President Bush's threatened veto, voted 395-7 in favor of a bill making the Coast Guard enforce security zones around eight liquefied natural gas terminals and any arriving tankers all potential terrorism targets. The White House has complained that the requirement would divert the Coast Guard from other high-priority missions.
• The Senate ethics committee said retiring Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., created an appearance of impropriety when he called a federal prosecutor in his state to inquire about the timing of corruption indictments. But the committee recommended no punishment.
• The Senate voted 96-1 for legislation that would increase veterans' benefits and establish pensions for Filipinos who served alongside Americans in World War II.
