Rangel owes IRS
The head of the House tax-writing committee admitted Wednesday that he owes about $5,000 to the Internal Revenue Service for failing to report income on his returns. But Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., asked colleagues to let the ethics committee investigate and urged Republicans to stop trying to have him removed from his post. As House Ways and Means Committee chairman, Rangel has a powerful say over tax-law changes. By his own admission, he has no excuse for not reporting years worth of rental income on a beach vacation property he owns in the Dominican Republic.
More Katrina waste
The government wasted millions of dollars on four no-bid contracts it handed out for Hurricane Katrina work, including paying $20 million for a camp for evacuees that was never inspected and proved to be unusable, investigators say. A report by the Homeland Security Department's office of inspector general, obtained Wednesday by the Associated Press, is the latest to detail mismanagement in the multibillion-dollar Katrina hurricane recovery effort, which investigators have said wasted at least $1 billion.
Car safety details
The federal government unveiled a new public database Wednesday that will enable consumers to look up the number of alleged deaths, injuries and cases of property damage involving passenger vehicles. Consumer groups have sought the information, which was part of legislation passed by Congress after the massive recall of Firestone tires in 2000. Dan Zielinski, a spokesman for the Rubber Manufacturers Association, said the data included ''accusations and people who review this database should keep that in mind.'' The database can be found at: http://www.safercar.gov.

$8 billion for roads
The Senate voted Wednesday to shift $8 billion into the highway trust fund, restoring solvency to an account that is going broke and staving off what could have been crippling delays in federal aid for road and bridge projects around the country.
