Vaccine's use grows
The cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil also works to prevent cancers of the vagina and vulva, federal health officials said Friday, as they approved expanding its use to protect against those diseases as well. The Food and Drug Administration first approved Gardasil in 2006 for the prevention of cervical cancer in girls and women ages 9 to 26. The vaccine works by protecting against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, that cause about 70 percent of cervical cancers. The HPV virus, transmitted by sexual contact, causes genital warts that sometimes develop into cancer.
Site cracks down
The popular video-sharing site YouTube has moved to purge terrorists' training films and other videos that extremist groups might use to attract members, an imperfect process that will rely on users to report objectionable videos. It's nearly impossible to vet every video when 13 hours of new video are uploaded every few minutes. A quick search on Google-owned YouTube on Friday, one day after the new policies were posted, turned up several videos on how to make bombs using, for instance, such household items as toilet bowl cleaner and tin foil.

Shooter gets prison
A man is going to prison for shooting a 7-year-old Detroit girl who took a number of bullets aimed at her mother. Prosecutors said Calvin Tillie was sentenced Friday to 25 years to 60 years in prison on a guilty plea to assault with intent to murder and taking a hostage. The girl survived but needed many surgeries and has an artificial eye.
3UNION, MO.
Attacker sentenced
A woman who slashed a young mother's throat and kidnapped her newborn was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison. The woman Shannon Torrez attacked two years ago testified at her sentencing hearing. Stephenie Ochsenbine said she remembered being covered in blood and pleading with Torrez while her 1-year-old son, who also was covered in his mother's blood, watched the attack. Torrez, 38, entered a plea deal in May in which she conceded there was enough evidence for a guilty verdict without admitting guilt. Authorities said Torrez passed the child off as her own, until a relative found out and notified police.
4VERDEL, NEB.
Four workers killed
Four construction workers died in a collapsed trench after one of them fell in and his co-workers tried to rescue him, officials said Friday. The four men were working on the drainage trench near Verdel on Friday morning when part of it collapsed, the Knox County Sheriff's Office said. The roadway has been damaged by flooding from high Missouri River water levels. The six-mile, $2.26 million project was scheduled to be completed in October.
