Nuke pact with India
The United States and India signed an accord Friday that allows American businesses to sell nuclear fuel, technology and reactors to India, reversing a three-decade ban on atomic trade with the fast-growing nuclear-armed Asian power. The U.S.-Indian civilian nuclear cooperation pact is the result of three years of often frustrating political and diplomatic wrangling.

Ailing woman shot
An 88-year-old man fatally shot his ailing wife in her hospital bed Friday and was in critical condition after turning the gun on himself, an official said. Police would not say whether the shootings at Community Medical Center appeared to be intended as a mercy killing.

Lift dumps workers
One construction worker was killed and another was seriously injured Friday after a hydraulic lift platform collapsed. Police said the men were working on the lift when it toppled over, dumping them about 25 feet to the ground.

Jet passengers hurt
Paramedics at Miami International Airport treated several American Airlines passengers who complained Friday of bumps and bruises because of turbulence on a flight from Argentina.

Activist helps FBI
Federal prosecutors are seeking a major sentencing break for an activist who committed arson at Michigan State University, publicly acknowledging for the first time his wide-ranging undercover role in investigations of eco-terrorism. Frank Ambrose of Detroit recorded 178 conversations with other targets, putting himself at risk as he traveled out of state to help the FBI, the government said.

Soldier drops suit
An atheist soldier who accused U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the Defense Department of violating his religious freedom dropped the lawsuit Friday, citing his plans to leave the Army next spring. But the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, which filed the suit in 2007 with Pfc. Jeremy Hall, still plans to pursue allegations of widespread religious discrimination within the military.
7BERNALILLO, N.M.
Balloon crashes
A hot-air balloon crashed into power lines and burst into flames Friday during Albuquerque's annual balloon fiesta, throwing both men on board to the ground and killing one of them. Witnesses said that winds had picked up a bit and that many of the balloons were flying low right before the balloon crashed.
