Two slain, eight hurt

A gunman opened fire outside an under-21 nightclub, killing two girls and injuring eight other people before shooting himself in the head, police said. Police spokeswoman Mary Wheat said there was no indication the man knew the people he shot while they were standing in front of the Zone nightclub late Saturday. The shooter, 24, was in critical condition.

'Mall Cop' rules

The Kevin James comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop kept its grip on first place at U.S. and Canadian theaters for a second straight weekend, taking in $21.5 million in ticket sales. The film fended off the vampire tale Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, which opened in second place with $20.7 million, Media by Numbers LLC said Sunday. It also held off Oscar contenders Slumdog Millionaire and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which moved up in the rankings to fifth and ninth, respectively.

COATESVILLE, PA.
15 homes burn

 

The latest in a string of suspicious fires in a Philadelphia suburb tore through a block of row houses, damaging 15 homes, leaving several dozen people homeless and prompting city officials to declare a state of emergency. One firefighter suffered an ankle injury, but no other injuries were reported.

WASHINGTON
Building evacuated

Washington fire officials said the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House was evacuated briefly after smoke from a fireplace clouded one of the floors about 12:15 p.m. Sunday. The Secret Service evacuated the building for about 30 minutes as a precaution. There were only a few people inside the building, which houses White House staff.

COLEMAN, FLA.
Inmates injured

Eight male inmates were taken to a hospital after a ''large-scale fight'' Sunday at a federal prison, a spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said. The fight broke out in the recreation yard at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, spokeswoman Traci Billingsley said.
