Panel idea rejected
The White House on Thursday said it did not support creation of an independent panel to investigate the Bush administration's harsh interrogations of terror suspects. ''The last few days might well be evidence of why something like this would likely just become a political back-and-forth,'' presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said. ''We're all best suited looking forward.''

Peanut plant toured
A south Georgia factory linked to a deadly nationwide salmonella outbreak was infested with vermin and had a leaky roof, gaping holes and other problems, attorneys said Thursday after touring the plant. Bill Marler, an attorney who has filed nine lawsuits on behalf of salmonella victims, said he and a team of experts discovered the problems at the Peanut Corp. of America's plant in Blakely, Ga.

Water advisory
Thousands of Hartford-area water customers have been dealing with a boil advisory for two days as officials try to find out why micro-organisms have been appearing in water coming out of a treatment plant. The organisms are not harmful, but their presence in finished water coming from the public water supply shows there is a problem with the system, state officials said.

Threat investigated
A student was charged Thursday with making a terroristic threat for allegedly posting signs around Stephen F. Austin State University that warned of a deadly mass shooting. Jennifer Grant, 20, was arrested Wednesday and released Thursday after posting $7,500 bond, authorities said.

Teacher sentenced
A former teacher who fled to Mexico with a 13-year-old student was sentenced Thursday to eight to 10 years in prison. Kelsey Peterson, 27, pleaded guilty in January to two state counts of first-degree sexual assault of a minor. She is to serve her sentence simultaneously with a six-year federal prison sentence for transporting a minor across state lines to have sex. She also must register as a sex offender.
