Baby dies after falling into day-care mop bucket

By Associated Press

NEW YORK: New York City police have arrested the operator of an in-home day care following the death of an 11-month-old boy who apparently fell into a mop bucket.

Police say 28-year-old Krystal Khan is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities responded to a call of an unconscious child at her home in Queens on Monday.

Police say Khan told them she had stepped out of her living room briefly, and returned to find the child in the bucket.

The baby died at a hospital. An autopsy will be performed today.

Police did not say whether Khan had legal representation. There was no answer at a telephone number listed at her home address.

A sign on the door of Khan's home reads: ''Child care all day, every day.''

Disgusting that the parent would give that trust to someone who has that petty sign on their house , goodness

Everything isn't always the parents fault! They paid good money for what they thought was excellent child care. People need to start putting the blame where it belongs, and give these parents, who are the victims, support in the loss of their wonderful child!
People that make those statements either have no children or always blame everyone else for their own short comings!
Condolences to the patents, grand parents and everyone who loved this child!

The day care provider should be charged with more than that, it is her fault for leaving a bucket of water out where a young child can get into it, and tell me how long was she really out of the room??
my condolences to the family. I hope her daycare is shut down forever.

Home child care is a growing business. Many don't take it seriously, and don't really provide a truly safe environment. Many parents will only use this kind of service because it is cheaper than a fully staffed child care facility. Or because they know the person providing the care (maybe even a family member).

It was an accident, there's no one to blame here, just an accident. Unfortunately a baby died but a simple accident, they happen every day.

No common sense this is NOT an accident. The moron at the day care leaves a bucket of water and a child unattened in the same room -didn't use common sense there did she? She was irresponsible and stupid-maybe people should take some PERSONAL responsiblity for the actions instead of just blowing off everything as "accidents"

Parents today claim they can't make ends meet unless both parents work.

Rubbish--parents REFUSE to give up their vacations, boats, toys. etc. That's why there needs to be two incomes.

The most important job today is raising YOUR OWN CHILD.

Oh please, I agree with common sense. I had a wonderful in home provider who had to call me because my son was running down the hallway and tripped and his head hit the door frame and he had to get stitches. Do you think that I tried to blame her or my son's school when I TWICE had to go there and pick him up because of injuries on the playground? My cousin died back in the 50's because my aunt left a can of turpentine on the back porch as she was painting and before she knew it he walked right over and picked it up and drank it. ACCIDENT!

Big diffence between a kid running and tripping over his OWN feet and an ADULT who is suppost to know you don't leave a child unattened with a bucket with water in it-I guess it's ok to leave a kid in a bath tub to answer the phone too?? Hello! this kid is DEAD because an ADULT was too stupid to secure his play area.

LET'S ALL BE HONEST HERE! HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD LEAVE A MOP BUCKET FOR A CURIOUS BABY TO GET INTO? FIRST OFF THERE WAS PROBABLY SOME TYPE OF CLEANING CHEMICAL (LET ALONE DIRTY WATER). THAT IN ITSELF SHOULD HAVE MADE HER KEEP IF OUT OF REACH FROM THE CHILD -ESPECIALLY IF SHE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH CHILDREN!

olfuzzster...

There was no criminal intent or neglect in this case, there are always ways that children can get hurt in a home. Stop being so dramatic, this was an unfortunate mishap, plain and simple. Krystal Khan will be released with a slap on the wrist.

I think that an incident like this deserves more than "a slap on the wrist". It doesnt seem to me that this young woman had intent to harm any child. Lets be realistic; this is an unfortunate accident that should/could have been easily avoided. However we do not know; how long the provider was away from the bucket, what scenario developed that drew her away from the mop bucket( there could have been a more dangerous situation developing as she could have been caring for more than one child. It could be that she was understaffed for the day maybe her assistant called. Im not trying to justify her actions, just trying to point out that sometimes tragedies happen, but I'm not sure I believe she should spend the rest of her life in prison. Im sure she is going through a personal he#l right now, and I feel for not only the family of the child but also this young woman.

she took cold pills, and fell asleep
then lied and said she left the room for
a minute.
she is an idiot who should not be allowed to
watch children, lock her up and throw away the key since I am sure they wont sentence her to death although i believe in an eye for an eye and stupidity and ignorance is not a valid excuse for her moronic behavior

My prayers go out to the family and friends of this child. I work at a daycare and these parents rely on us to treat and PROTECT these innocent children like we would our own. Anyone in their right mind would scan the situation and check for harmful things before leaving a room. If this would have been done she would have realized a baby and a bucket don't go together. Why would you leave a baby in a room by their self anyways. I hope she gets what she deserves

LAZY, thats all it is, she should not have any kind of cleaning stuff out by the time the kids come in for the day, wipe the floor with water and a rag until the end of the day, and if you dont get a break from caretaking then you shouldn't be in business, its a job, do your job, you get paid to take care of these little lives.

@ just an observer...well said...i am married and both my husband and i work outside our home. I sacrifice quality time with my partner and children as work work opposite shifts. My children have never been in "daycare". they have been in pre-school...that is only 3 days a week 2 hours a day. however we need 2 incomes to just pay our bills. we are middle class and do not splurge on luxuries...they will come after our children graduate college.

I can't believe people posting on here about moms staying home w/their kids! Give me a break! Maybe if anti-choice conservatives stopped pushing for every woman to give birth & stopped removing all child care funding, stopped not covering birth control & stopped making parents choose between food/rent b/c they have low-paying, crappy jobs, etc. Try supporting working moms, not putting them down!

wow!! the daycare worker was seriously being careless. just plain careless. everyone knows with little kids they are in everything so quickly and easily even when you are paying attention and its even harder to watch several children at once. IT'S SAD, IM JUST TIRED OF ALL THE TRAGEDIES THAT ARE OCCURING ON THE CHILDREN ALL OVER THE WORLD MY GOODNESS ALREADY

Tom

Posted 09:09 AM, 06/18/2009

For 15 years I owned a day care center for children. In Arizona, our Health Department as well as DES would have jerked my license for even the slightest infraction such as this. Our teachers watched over themselves and policed every area into which any of our 100 kids could get. We had 2 and 3 layers of protection against just such a tragedy. Our outside playgrounds were monitored by camera and by multiple staff. I can't stop somebody from doing childcare out of their home; one of my best friends and competitors ran a center out of her home for as long as I had mine, and did just fine with it. BUT, I strongly believe that it is the responsibility and duty of anybody doing childcare to provide CARE OF THE CHILD! No excuse child care people. CARE FOR THE CHILD! Not even one close call is acceptable.

I read this article yesterday in another website. It stated that the daycare provider had taken cold medicine before she started watching the child and now in this article it is stating that she left the room breifly...
Either way there should never have been a mop and bucket on the floo with something in it when a small child is around. We all know a child is curious and will go and try to see what is in the bucket or knock it over or something.
I am sorry and my prayers are with the parents and family of this child. I hope this will be a wakeup call to ALL child care providers... DO NOT TAKE MEDICATION BEFORE, OR DURING THE TIME YOU ARE WATCHING A CHILD and DON'T LEAVE THINGS LIKE THIS IN THE REACH OF CHILDREN.

I have been a single mother of 3 boys for almost 20 years. (now 24,18,12) and I know how "interested" they can be. u have to keep eyes on ALL kids at ALL times. I'm thankful that my best friend owns her own daycare and watched my boys, alot of ppl arnt that blessed, BUT WHY DO THE CHILDREN HAVE TO SUFFER(IN HIS CASE, PARENTS) FOR THE NEGLEGENCE OF "ADULTS" sad sad story!!!

not all mothers have the option to stay at hom i am a single mother and must work to support my kids i cant work a night shift because there is no one to watch my kids at night they have been in a daycare for quite som time and i made sure before i enrolled them that the center was up to MY standards the problem is not on the mother or father but the negligance of the daycare provider i would rather my kids be in an accredited center than in a home daycare setting

I couldnt AGREE more with olfuzzster! Big difference between someone running and having a accident then someone u pay to watch your child actually not watching them, at 11 months ir at any age what was it doing sitting out, u cant take your eyes off these babies for a second isnt that what u are being paid to do? To many things happening to these poor Defenseless children! And for all the people who feel like mothers should stay home well anymore in case u havent notices most people dont have a choice! Im a single parent with no boats, vacations, or toys! Some PEOPLE dont have a choice! But when your daily job is to be paid ot watch a baby watch them like a hawk its real simple..

Sitter is at fault regardless of whether it was a stupid mistake or not. Kinda like how modern parents are at fault for having everyone else but themselves raise their kids. I know not all parents can afford to stay home. But many don't even want to. Americans are free to choose true. Unfortunately the kids and society are paying the price.
