NEW YORK
Auditor pleads guilty

Bernard Madoff's longtime auditor pleaded guilty to securities fraud charges Tuesday, saying he failed to do his job to verify the disgraced money manager's financial records but he did not know Madoff was running history's biggest Ponzi scheme. David Friehling, 49, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Settlement reached

Five immigrant men who were detained in roundups in New York and eventually deported after the Sept. 11 attacks have reached a $1.26 million settlement with the U.S. government. The men were part of a lawsuit against the government over the roundups that put them in federal detention and the abuse they say they suffered while they were there.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.
Man shoots family, self

A businessman who coached basketball at the religious school his two teenagers attended fatally shot his family in their upscale home before turning the gun on himself, police said Tuesday. Authorities would not hint at what might have driven William Maxwell to kill his family Monday night.

Rapper indicted in deaths

An aspiring California rapper has been indicted on capital murder charges in the deaths of four people found bludgeoned in September. Twenty-year-old Richard ''Sam'' McCroskey of Castro Valley, Calif., was charged Tuesday in indictments returned by a Prince Edward County Circuit Court grand jury. McCroskey is charged in the Sept. 18 deaths of his girlfriend, her parents and his girlfriend's friend.

Sniper plans to appeal

Attorneys for sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad plan to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in an effort to stop next week's execution. Muhammad is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Tuesday at a Virginia prison. Attorneys for the 48-year-old have said they planned to file the appeal Tuesday. Muhammad is to be executed for the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers at a Manassas, Va., gas station during a killing spree in 2002 that left 10 dead.

Health-care bill delay

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., signaled Tuesday that Congress may miss a year-end deadline for passing health-care legislation, leaving the measure's fate to the uncertainties of the 2010 election season.
