PepsiCo penalty set aside
A judge has tossed out a default judgment — for now at least — that could have cost PepsiCo Inc. $1.26 billion after the soft drink maker didn't respond to a lawsuit claiming it stole the idea for bottled water. The decision Friday by a Wisconsin court means PepsiCo will get its say in court — now that it has found out about the case. Two men claim PepsiCo violated trade secrets and stole their idea to sell bottled water.

Veteran admits scheming
An Army veteran admitted in federal court Friday to plotting with his wife to bilk the U.S. government by faking paralysis after a car wreck to get disability benefits and avoid being deployed to Iraq. Jeffrey Rush, 27, also pleaded guilty to fraud charges tied to his product-liability lawsuit against Ford Motor Co. and a seat-belt maker over a 2004 rollover accident.

Investigators raid ACORN
Louisiana state investigators raided ACORN offices Friday, taking away computer hard drives and documents as part of a probe into alleged embezzlement and tax fraud when the organization's national headquarters was based in New Orleans. ''This is an investigation of everything — ACORN, the national organization, the local organization and all of its affiliated entities,'' Assistant Attorney General David Caldwell said. ACORN staff on the scene declined to comment.

Charges in nun's slaying
A teenager was charged Friday with killing a nun after allegedly breaking into her trailer home on the Navajo Indian reservation in search of cash or valuable items. Federal authorities accused Reehahlio Carroll, 18, of ''unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought'' in the death of Sister Marguerite Bartz, 64, who served at St. Berard Catholic Church in Navajo. Carroll is expected to appear in federal court on Monday.

Plane part falls from sky
An engine tailcone fell off a Delta Air Lines jet shortly after takeoff Thursday and plummeted thousands of feet before landing harmlessly on a lawn in a Long Island residential neighborhood. Apparently, neither the pilots nor anyone on the ground immediately noticed the mishap. The aircraft, a Boeing 777, doesn't need the part to fly and carried on safely to its destination, Tokyo, aviation officials said.
