E. coli feared at schools
The chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee wants an investigation into the risk of deadly E. coli getting into school lunches. Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., is worried about a recent outbreak that killed at least two people and sickened about two dozen others in 11 states. The E. coli outbreak was linked to ground beef produced by Fairbank Farms of Ashville, N.Y. No schools were involved in the outbreak. But Miller said he's worried that tainted food might be purchased for school meal programs.
EAST ST. LOUIS, ILL.
Shooting suspect caught
Investigators on Sunday captured a man they believe opened fire on a car parked at a gas station, killing three women, including an acquaintance of the suspect, state investigators said. Children inside the bullet-riddled vehicle escaped harm. All the wounded in Saturday night's shooting outside the Crown Food Mart in East St. Louis were shot several times, mostly in the torso, and died later at a hospital, police said.
SEATTLE
'Lone domestic terrorist'
Police described a suspect in the shooting death of a Seattle policeman as a ''lone domestic terrorist'' and said he was also suspected of firebombing four police vehicles. At a news conference, Seattle Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel identified 41-year-old Christopher Monfort as the man shot by police on Friday as he was sought in connection with the Halloween killing of officer Timothy Brenton.

Transit strike continues
Commuters in the City of Brotherly Love have been told to gear up to begin a second week of finding other ways to work following the collapse of a proposed deal to end a six-day-old strike by about 5,000 bus drivers, subway and trolley conductors and mechanics.

Push for chocolate milk
The creators of the ''Got Milk?'' campaign are getting ready to make a big push to keep chocolate milk on kids' minds and on school lunch menus, a plan that has some educators and obesity activists none too pleased. The new ad campaign from the dairy industry, set to launch today, emphasizes that sugary flavorings are ways to get kids to drink milk. Without them, some youngsters won't drink regular milk and won't get its nutrients, the ads say.
