Increase in hate crimes
Reports of hate crimes against gays and religious groups increased sharply in 2008, according to FBI data released Monday. Overall, the number of reported hate crimes increased about 2 percent. These same figures show a nearly 11 percent increase in hate crimes based on sexual orientation, and a nearly 9 percent increase in hate crimes based on religion. The largest category, racially motivated hate crimes, fell less than 1 percent.

Final spacewalk complete
A pair of astronauts zipped through the third and final spacewalk of their mission Monday, helping to install a 1,200-pound oxygen tank at the International Space Station and accomplishing everything else on their list. ''You mean there's nothing left for us to do?'' Randolph Bresnik asked as the spacewalk wrapped up. He was assured no work remained.
BRIDGEVILLE, PA.
Animal cruelty charge
Police say a western Pennsylvania man told them he kicked his girlfriend's puppy to death because he was upset that the pit bull wouldn't behave before the start of Sunday's Pittsburgh Steelers game. Twenty-two-year-old William Woodson, of Bridgeville, remained jailed Monday on a charge of animal cruelty.

ACORN chief sentenced
A former Las Vegas supervisor for the political advocacy group ACORN was sentenced Monday to up to three years' probation for his role in a plan to pay canvassers to register Nevada voters during last year's presidential campaign. ''I just want to say I take responsibility for what I did,'' Christopher Edwards told the judge.
COLUMBIA, S.C.
Ethical breaches alleged
Gov. Mark Sanford is accused of breaking 37 ethics laws regarding campaign finances and travel, including using taxpayer money for airplane tickets that took him around the world and to Argentina for a rendezvous with a woman. The governor's attorney said he looks forward to answering the ''technical questions.'' Details of the civil charges were released Monday and carry a maximum $74,000 in fines.
