BURRILLVILLE, R.I.
Salami recalled

A Rhode Island meat company recalled 1.24 million pounds of pepper-coated salami Saturday after officials conducting a monthslong, multistate investigation of a salmonella outbreak compared shopping receipts of those who got sick. The recall by Daniele International Inc. comes amid an outbreak that has sickened 184 people in 38 states since July. But Daniele spokesman Jason Maloni said ''there's no evidence that points to us'' as the source. The company has set up a hot line for consumers or distributors at 888-345-4160.

MELVILLE, N.Y.
Blast closes highway

A portion of New York's Long Island Expressway was closed for several hours Saturday after a fuel truck flipped and exploded, killing the driver and creating a fireball seen for miles. Emergency crews battled the raging blaze for three hours after the 8 a.m. accident Saturday between Melville and Plainview near the Nassau County line. The intense heat melted the supports for a huge road sign, which collapsed across all eight lanes of the roadway. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove it.

WASHINGTON
Bird forces landing

A collision with a large bird forced a United Airlines plane to return to Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday. FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker said United Flight 915 sucked a large bird into its right engine shortly after takeoff around 4:30 p.m. EST. She said the pilot quickly returned the plane to the airport and landed safely.

PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS
Collision causes spill

As much as 450,000 gallons of crude oil may have spilled in a southeastern Texas port when two vessels collided Saturday morning, but it's unclear whether that much actually leaked from the damaged tank, a U.S. Coast Guard official said. No one was injured in the collision, but part of the Port of Port Arthur was closed and some residents were evacuated. Several local officials said only 1,000 barrels — or about 42,000 gallons — of oil had been spilled into the water.
