PHOENIX: A search was under way Sunday after authorities said a man being held on murder and robbery charges escaped from an Arizona jail.
Maricopa County authorities launched a manhunt for Adan Orduno Jr., 26, who is described by Sheriff Joe Arpaio as a violent “troublemaker.”
Sheriff’s spokesman Officer Christopher Hegstrom said Orduno was being housed in the county jail’s psychiatric unit and was discovered missing just before 9 a.m.
Authorities originally thought Orduno might have been hiding somewhere at the sprawling south Phoenix jail.
But KPHO-TV reported that jail personnel searched the approximately 600,000-square-foot complex and determined Orduno wasn’t there.
Orduno has served time in state prison for burglary, theft and aggravated assault, online state records show.
He was being held at the Maricopa County on murder and robbery charges.
The Arizona Republic reported the charges stemmed from an October 2011 robbery at a Phoenix jewelry store that led to a police chase in which either Orduno or an accomplice fired at pursuing officers.
Orduno recently was declared competent to stand trial.
