Coast readies for Karen
From a tiny, vulnerable island off the Louisiana coast to the beaches of the Florida Panhandle, Gulf Coast residents prepared Thursday for a possible hit from Tropical Storm Karen, which threatened to become the first named tropical system to menace the United States this year. Karen was forecast to lash the northern Gulf Coast over the weekend as a weak hurricane or tropical storm. A hurricane watch was in effect from Grand Isle, La., to west of Destin, Fla. A tropical storm warning was issued for the Louisiana coast from Grand Isle to the mouth of the Pearl River, including the New Orleans area.

2 killed on hunting trip
A 14-year-old boy on a deer hunting trip shot and killed two others in the hunting party at a mountain cabin, then accidentally shot and wounded himself, authorities said Thursday. Authorities would not say whether they think the shooting of the two men was an accident or intentional, or whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the cabin. They were all part of a group staying at the cabin. The teen fled after shooting the men but then apparently accidentally shot himself in the leg and returned to the cabin for help, Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer said. Another member of the group held the boy at gunpoint, forced him to get on the floor, then taped him to a chair.

Ricin used in suicide try
More than a dozen members of the Utah National Guard were called to help with decontamination after authorities said a 37-year-old woman tried to commit suicide with highly toxic ricin. North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes said authorities responded about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, after the woman’s out-of-state cousin reported receiving troubling texts and a call from her. Police brought in a hazardous materials team that detected ricin, and they evacuated a family of four that was living upstairs from the woman’s basement apartment. Ricin is derived from castor beans. Hawkes said the woman apparently ordered 60 castor beans online, ground them up and ate half of them. She was taken to the hospital, where she was conscious and speaking to police a day later.
