SAN FRANCISCO

Anti-abortion activists march

Many thousands of anti-abortion protesters from across California marched through downtown San Francisco on Saturday, calling for restrictions on a medical procedure that was legalized more than 40 years ago. A massive and diverse crowd of protesters rallied in front of City Hall before marching down Market Street to Justin Herman Plaza for the 10th annual “Walk for Life West Coast.” They chanted “Pro Life” and carried signs that read “Defend Life” and “Women deserve better than abortion.” San Francisco police did not immediately provide an official crowd estimate, but at one point marchers stretched across more than a mile of Market Street, the liberal city’s main thoroughfare.

PHOENIX

GOP censures McCain

The Arizona Republican Party formally censured Sen. John McCain on Saturday, citing a voting record they say is insufficiently conservative. The resolution to censure McCain was approved by a voice-vote during a meeting of state committee members in Tempe, state party spokesman Tim Sifert said. It needed signatures from at least 20 percent of state committee members to reach the floor for debate. According to the resolution, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee has campaigned as a conservative but has lent his support to issues “associated with liberal Democrats,” such as immigration reform and the new health-care law.

SEATTLE

Driver loses hand

An explosion from a firecracker inside a moving Jeep blew off the driver’s hand early Saturday and scattered debris over half a block in Spokane, prompting initial fears over the man’s intent, police and neighbors said. Witnesses saw a flash of light from inside the vehicle as it drove down a residential street, police said. The explosion blew out several of the Jeep’s windows, knocked off its dashboard and splattered blood all over the driver’s side door, a witness said. Police and medics arrived within minutes and applied further tourniquets, then brought the driver to a hospital, where staff credited the first aid with saving his life.
