Ohio demonstrators protest Zimmerman verdict

Associated Press

COLUMBUS: Crowds of people gathered at a county courthouse and the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus to protest the not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman case.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the peaceful demonstrations were pulled together quickly on social media after a Florida jury late Saturday acquitted Zimmerman, a Latino, in the shooting death of black 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The verdict fanned flames of racial tension already burning since the February 2012 shooting.

The two sign-toting groups of people in Columbus eventually joined together Sunday and marched three times around the Statehouse, protesting what they decried as a miscarriage of justice.

Thousands of people in other cities also protested the verdict Sunday.
