Diver Coaster might be making splash at King's Island

By Alex Shebar
Cincinnati Enquirer

MASON: There is a surprise coming for King's Island guests, and it's going to be a big one.

A roller coaster is being constructed at the Mason theme park, and it can be seen from the top of the park's Eiffel Tower replica.

Don Helbig, the park's public relations manager, remains coy, stating only that it will be the most exciting attraction in the 36-year history of the park.

But local experts are pretty sure they know exactly what's coming.

''We're thinking it's going to be a Diver Coaster, which has a very steep drop associated with it, about a 200- to 300-foot range,'' said Dennis Spiegel, President of International Theme Park Services located in Cincinnati. ''There are only five of them in the world — and there's nothing like it around here.''

The Diver is part of a collection of roller coasters known as a megacoaster, due to its size, Spiegel said. It is made of one long car with two to three rows of eight to 10 seats and uses stadium seating so every rider's view is perfect.

If it wasn't obvious by the name, the Diver is meant to do one thing. It climbs an enormous hill, breaks at the peak, and then plummets straight down — 90 degrees — and ends by splashing into water.

All of this is done with a floorless train, so it's the seat that holds a rider in — there is nothing above, below or to the side.

The closest Diver is The Griffon at Busch Gardens Europe in Williamsburg. The other three are located in Florida, Canada, England and Taiwan.
