CLEVELAND: Cleveland City Council has approved an amnesty period for parking lot owners who owe years of back taxes to come clean.
Cleveland Finance Director Sharon Dumas said she thinks the city has $3 million in taxes coming from deadbeat lots.
There won't be any penalties if they pay up during the two-month amnesty proposed by Mayor Frank Jackson's administration and approved unanimously by the council Monday night. Once time is up, the city will aggressively pursue the back taxes, penalties and interest.
City Assessments and Licenses Commissioner Dedrick Stephens says the city plans bring in special auditors to help identify what's owed and collect it.
Cleveland fines owners 10 percent of the amount they fail to pay and charges 2 percent interest per month.
