Dr. John C. Green, director of the Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron, recently talked with Ohio.com about vice presidential candidates for presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.
Green said vice presidential candidates must possess three important traits.
Rudy Giuliani
Born: May 28, 1944
Political career: Republican mayor of New York City; praised for drop in crime rate, but criticized for police brutality scandals; named Time magazine Person of the Year for his handling of Sept. 11 attacks. Unsuccessfully ran for Republican presidential nomination (2007-08).
Mike Huckabee
Born: Aug. 24, 1955
Political career: Lieutenant governor of Arkansas (1993-96). Governor of Arkansas; third Republican since Reconstruction (1996-2007). Unsuccessfully ran for Republican presidential nomination (2007-08).
Joe Lieberman
Born: Feb. 24, 1942
Political career: Current Connecticut senator, a seat he has held since 1988. Unsuccessfully ran for Democratic presidential nomination (2003-04). Vice presidential candidate for Al Gore in 2000.
Sarah Palin
Born: Feb. 11, 1964
Political career: Governor of Alaska since 2006. Ethics commissioner on the state's Oil and Gas Commission (2003-04).
Tim Pawlenty
Born: Nov. 27, 1960
Political career: Governor of Minnesota since 2003, succeeding Jesse Ventura. Co-chair of McCain's presidential campaign alongside Phil Gramm and Tim Loeffler. Elected to Minnesota House of Representatives in 1994 and became Republican Party Majority Leader in 1999.
Colin Powell
Born: April 5, 1937
Political career: Former U.S. Secretary of State (2001-04). Served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993). A professional soldier for 35 years, rising to the rank of 4-star General of the U.S. Army.
Mitt Romney
Born: March 12, 1947
Political career: Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts (1994). Elected governor of Massachusetts (2002-06). Unsuccessfully ran for Republican presidential nomination (2007-08).
Green said the vice president is "often someone know one expected" because the presidential candidate has to closely evaluate the positives and negatives of candidate.
Listen to Green's conclusion.
