Ohio lawmaker Ryan weighing run for governor

Beacon Journal staff report

U.S. Rep Tim Ryan will make a decision in the next few months about whether he will consider a run for Ohio governor in 2014.

Ryan, D-Niles, who easily won re-election this month, told the Beacon Journal in an interview Monday afternoon that he wants to see what happens in Washington, D.C., and what committee assignments he receives. He expects to be reappointed to the House Appropriations Committee, which decides on the budget.

“I want to be in the position to be the most help,” he said. “It’s a big decision. I want to try to be mindful.”

Ryan was alluding to a recent book he wrote, A Mindful Nation: How a Simple Practice Can Help Us Reduce Stress, Improve Performance and Recapture the American Spirit, that details a meditation technique called mindfulness he is using to cope with the stress of being in Congress.

Ryan, who is on a short list of potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates, visited the Beacon Journal to discuss his book and how he thinks the “mindfulness” approach could help others in and out of Congress.
