State holding public meeting on proposed ramp closure in Akron

While the Ohio Department of Transportation has delayed plans to reconfigure the Interstate 76/77/Main Street/Broadway interchange in Akron, the state might shut down one of the ramps in this area to curb unsafe, weaving conditions.

The state is proposing closure of the westbound Interstate 76 entrance ramp at Wolf Ledges Parkway. Vehicles entering at this ramp must compete with those trying to get off at the next exit for Main Street and Broadway.

“We want to eliminate that movement,” said Justin Chesnic, an ODOT spokesman.

A meeting on the proposal will be 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 at the Odom Boulevard branch library, 600 Vernon Odom Blvd. in Akron.

If the ramp were closed, motorists would have to enter the highway at the next on-ramp, about a mile away. The state would barricade the ramp and remove all signs, Chesnic said.

About 3,800 drivers use the ramp each day, he said.
