TV watch parties
Political campaigns will hold numerous watch parties in the Akron-Canton area for tonight’s vice-presidential debate.
Information about the events is available on President Barack Obama’s campaign website, https://barackobama.com, and Mitt Romney’s site, www.mittromney.com/events/all/OH.
The debate between Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate, will air at 9 p.m. on the main television networks and many cable news channels.
Auction fundraiser
AKRON: The Citizen’s Committee for Children Services will hold its annual silent and live auction fundraiser, A Night of Sweet Adventure, at 6 p.m. Friday at Portage Country Club, 240 N. Portage Path, Akron.
The benefit, inspired by children’s board game Candyland, will feature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and auctions.
Tickets for the event are $50 a person.
Proceeds will help support passage of Issue 73, the Summit County Children Services renewal levy.

Forum on levy
BRIMFIELD TWP.: A forum to discuss the Field school district’s 5-mill levy on the Nov. 6 ballot will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria of Field High School, 2900 State Route 43.
The district is asking voters to approve a measure that would raise about $1.8 million annually for operations (3 mills) and permanent improvements (2 mills) for the next three years.
Passage would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $153 per year.
CUYAHOGA VALLEY
Volunteers sought
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is seeking volunteers for The Polar Express train rides.
The holiday-themed rides based on Chris Van Alsburg’s story and movie about a young boy’s trip to the North Pole will be held Nov. 16 through Dec. 20, with no trips on Nov. 21-22. There will be matinees at 10 a.m. Dec. 15-16.
The trains will run from Akron’s Northside Station and Rockside Station in Independence to Peninsula (the North Pole).
Volunteers are needed on the train to play Santa and elves, to read the story to children and to serve cookies and hot cocoa.
Additional elves are needed at the North Pole. Training will be provided.

PLAIN TOWNSHIP
Loader purchased
PLAIN TWP.: Township trustees on Tuesday approved the purchase of a loader from Southeast Equipment for the road department at a cost of $137,000.
Trustees said Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad would be working on crossings in the township this fall and that some road closings could be necessary.
They also set a meeting for Oct. 25 with Stark County Engineer Keith Bennett to discuss replacing the Werner Church Road bridge. The public meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at Plain Township Hall, 2600 Easton St. NE.

Meet with LaRose
State Sen. Frank LaRose, R-Copley Township, will hold office hours throughout his district Saturday.
Hours are: 8 to 10 a.m., Barberton City Hall, 576 W. Park Ave.; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Cuyahoga Falls Library, Graefe Room, 2015 Third St.; 2 to 4 p.m., Twinsburg City Hall, 10075 Ravenna Road.
No appointment is necessary.
March anniversary
AKRON: The Million Women March will celebrate its 15th anniversary from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Patterson Park Community Center, 800 Patterson Ave., Akron.
Topics will include: Save Our Children, Is It Illegal to Bully, Are You Ready to Vote and A Day of Atonement.
The event will offer holiday shopping vendors, food, live entertainment, door prizes and raffles.
