Guests followed the yellow brick road to “Quest Cooks! In the Land of Oz” Thursday evening.
Lynnette Gallina and Shannon English Hexamer co-chaired the event at La Pizzaria Piazza, which was magically transformed into the Land of Oz for the benefit. The classic Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland appeared on large screens around the room.
Karen Belden and Joy Timken were honorary chairs and Candy Wallace and Lisa Warburton Gregory greeted guests.
Keith Hochadel, president and CEO of Quest Recovery and Prevention Services, portrayed Marvel the Magician as he encouraged bidding at the silent auction.
Hochadel expected the event to raise $100,000, which will be used for Quest’s substance abuse prevention programs at area schools; Deliverance House, a treatment facility for women; Bright House and Smith House, facilities to treat adolescents; and Wilson Hall, which provides adult men with counseling and education on how to live in a sober environment.
Lisa, a Quest client, gave a moving account of the help she received at Quest on her road to sobriety.
Adding to the Oz atmosphere were dancers from the Canton Ballet in their Wizard of Oz costumes. Kirstyn Wolonsky, Molly Null, Joey Jocas, Brad Beckwith and Quinn Cunningham performed a sequence from the ballet under the direction of Angelo Lemmo.
Enjoying the performance were: Bob and Sophie Vitale, Doug and Carrie Sibila, Aletha Carver, Daniel Vaughn, Norm and Pam Gaynor, P.J. Conley, Stephanie Rose, Mike and Natalie Weinz, and Adam and Jodi Luntz.
Mike Gallina and Ray Hexamer shared emcee duties, introducing Jim Conley, who was honored for his 12 years of service on the Quest board. Conley said it was a privilege to serve on the board with such a fine group of people. Conley, who enjoyed the event with his wife, Vicki, received a standing ovation from his friends in the crowd, including Carl and Sally Sorenson, Jim and Donna Bower, and Jerry and Joanne Medinger.
Paul Bishop conducted the live auction, where Ted and Carole Savastano had the winning bid for a Super Bowl Party; Brian Zimmerman won a turquoise bracelet, which he presented to his wife, Lindsay; and Jeff Doll won an Epicurean Dinner for 16 at Timken Shooting Shack.
