Summit Councilman Frank Comunale to run for Ohio House

Beacon Journal staff report

Summit County Councilman Frank Comunale said Thursday that he will run for a seat in the Ohio House.

His announcement sets up a primary showdown with Emilia Sykes, who is trying for the post her mother and father long have held. Both candidates have politically well-known names in Akron.

“It has been an absolute honor to serve our community on county council, and I pledge to continue to provide our neighborhoods with the same responsive enthusiasm as our next state representative,” Comunale said in a news release.

Comunale, 65, a Summit County Council representative for eight years, had been rumored to be considering a bid for the 34th House District for several months.

Sykes, 27, who works for Summit County, announced in September that she planned to run for the seat her father, Vernon Sykes, currently holds. He can’t run again because of term limits.

Either Vernon Sykes or his wife, Barbara, has held the Akron-centered seat for the past 30 years.

The filing deadline for the May 6 primary is Feb. 5.
