Tax help available in Akron on Saturday

Area low- to moderate-income taxpayers can get help preparing and filing their taxes at separate events Saturday.

The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the Ohio Benefit Bank will hold a free tax preparation and filing clinic from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the main Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St., in downtown Akron.

Appointments are required; call Mary Ann Mills, community organizer with the Ohio Benefit Bank, at 330-777-1051 or email mmills@acrfb.org.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a “Super Refund Saturday” event will be held at Akron Summit Community Action, 670 W. Exchange St., Akron.

Super Refund Saturdays are designed for walk-ins; no appointments are needed.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., free tax preparation and filing also will be offered at the University of Akron, College of Business Administration, 259 S. Broadway. Appointments are required; go to www.uakron.edu/cba/departments/accountancy. (Click the VITA tab.)

At each event volunteers will determine workers’ eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit, worth as much as $6,044 this year.

This year, the Earned Income Tax Credit thresholds range from $14,340 to $51,567 depending on filing status and number of dependants.

Participants should bring to the sessions a photo ID; Social Security numbers for themselves and dependents; income forms such as W-2s and 1099s; information about other income (interest income); deduction and tax credit information (such as proof of child-care expenses); and a copy of last year’s tax return.

Super Refund Saturdays are among a variety of free tax-preparation sessions sponsored by the Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Program. Appointments for sessions that are not part of Super Refund Saturdays can be made by calling 1-866-861-6401.

Taxpayers also can find Ohio Benefit Bank sites that provide tax services by calling 1-800-648-1176 or by visiting www.ohiobenefits.org and clicking on “Benefit Bank Locator.” Eligible taxpayers also may use this website to prepare their taxes themselves.

Most households with an adjusted gross income of less than $65,000 per year and filing individually or $95,000 per year for married couples filing jointly can use the Ohio Benefit Bank website to file their taxes.

Ohio Benefit Bank is a public-private initiative that links low- to moderate-income people with various services.
