Three men, juvenile get prison for Highland Square abduction and armed robbery

Beacon Journal staff report

Three men and a juvenile have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for the 2011 kidnapping and armed robbery of a Highland Square woman.

The woman was abducted after getting out of her car in her garage, authorities said.

The four co-defendants, all from Akron, also robbed a woman and her two adult children at gunpoint in their Johnland Avenue home.

Evin Collins, 22, of Tate Terrace, pleaded guilty to the charges last month and was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison.

Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tammy O’Brien handled the case.

After the abduction of the Highland Square woman in December 2011, Collins and his accomplices took the woman to an ATM to withdraw money and then stole her jewelry before releasing her, prosecutors said.

Tony Dewayne Smith Jr., 18, of Madison Avenue, was sentenced Friday in his plea deal to 16 years in prison.

Demico L. Smith, 22, of Lafollette Street, was given eight years after his Jan. 31 plea deal was finalized.

Ja’relle Jasean Smith, 17, of Madison Avenue, also pleaded guilty to another charge of aggravated robbery for a Mineola Avenue break-in. He was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison. His case was bound over to adult court in March 2012.

Prosecutors said the latter three defendants are brothers.
