Notre Dame coaches give support to Quinn

Weis and Parseghian say Browns quarterback can succeed in the NFL

By Stephanie Storm
Beacon Journal sports writer

CLEVELAND:Brady Quinn tried to play it cool with his old college coach.

But Charlie Weis wasn't having any of it.

The Notre Dame coach caught up by phone with his former quarterback two days ago and even accelerated his schedule this week so that he could watch Quinn's first NFL start on TV.

Before Quinn's big night, Weis asked Quinn how he was handling the pressure of starting this week. Quinn tried to act as if it were no big deal, telling Weis, ''It's the same as every week, I prepare the same every week.''

''I said, 'Hey, Brady that's a bunch of garbage; you can tell it to someone else who wants to hear that stuff,' '' Weis said. ''I go, 'You can say you're preparing the same every week, but it's the one thing when you're the backup, the other thing is when you're the starter.' ''

Former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian had Quinn on his mind as well this week as the Akron native traveled to Cleveland in preparation for being honored during the game Thursday as part of the Browns' 1947, 1948 and 1949 All-America Football Conference (AAFC) teams.

''I picked up the paper on the way to Cleveland and saw Quinn was starting,'' said Parseghian, 85. ''I thought that was nice to do that for me.''

Coincidence and chuckles aside, Parseghian strongly believes that Quinn has what it takes to make it in the professional ranks.

''He's a wonderful kid, a terrific individual,'' Parseghian said. ''He's high class, very competitive and personable. I can't see why he won't be a success. Maybe it won't be tonight, but over a period of time, he's very capable of doing the things the NFL requires.''

Quinn showed a level head and strong arm in his first half of play, completing 11-of-15 passes for 103 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Injury update

Fullback Lawrence Vickers (high ankle sprain) and offensive lineman Eric Steinbach (pulled rib cage muscle) were inactive for the game.

Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers (bruised ribs) was listed as questionable before the game but played. Although Rogers was slow to get up on the Denver Broncos' first score, he returned to play.

Running on empty

With the Broncos already hurting at the running back position, their rookie starting running back Ryan Torain left the game in the second quarter with a left knee sprain. Not long afterward, Torain's backup Selvin Young reaggravated a groin injury that sidelined him.

Cribb rolls

Browns return man Josh Cribbs added to his recent string of success early Thursday, returning a punt for 37 yards in the first quarter. Cribbs racked up 237 kickoff yards Sunday in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Taking advantage of the Broncos' anemic run defense, Browns backup running back Jerome Harrison had four rushes for 44 yards in the first half. He entered the game with just 79 yards on 12 carries this season.

Stand by her man

Shannon Dawson, the wife of Browns kicker Phil Dawson, sang the national anthem before the game. Shannon has performed the pregame duty once a season since her husband signed with the Browns in 1999, serving as a good-luck charm of sorts. Earlier in the week, Phil Dawson said the Browns have lost just one game after his wife serenaded the team.

After connecting on a career-high 54-yard kick last week, Dawson again showed the strength of his leg with a 52-yard field goal in the closing minute of the first half that gave Cleveland a 20-10 halftime lead.
