Christy Bell is a real fighter for herself and others.
The young Akron wife and mother is a two-time breast-cancer survivor who has always played a major role in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk campaign. She's at it again.
On Sunday, Christy is hosting a golf outing/breakfast/dinner fundraiser Swinging for a Reason for Making Strides at Sunny Hill Golf & Recreation Inc., 3734 Sunny Brook, Brimfield Township. The fun gets under way at 10 a.m.
Cost is $75 for continental breakfast, lunch, 18 holes of golf, a cart and dinner.
Lots of raffles are planned, and a hole-in-one can win you a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The first time I met the irrepressible Christy Bell was several months ago, after her husband donated a kidney to her father. So, giving back is somewhat of a family business for this couple.
''I don't know how she does everything she does in the face of adversity, but she does,'' her aunt, Mary Ann Traina, was proud to share.
''Last year our team Step Into the Ring (which Christy organized) led the teams in moneymaking events with a donation to Making Strides of $18,000.
''She just delivers one punch after another. Besides being co-owner of Louie's Bar & Grille, and playing a big part in the Akron Hamburger Festival, she has coached her 9-year-old daughter Gia's softball, volleyball and basketball teams. She's very involved in Gia's school. . . . Plus, she baby-sits for my granddaughter three times a week. She does catering on the side and helped in the search for Jessie Davis.''
Here's hoping Christy Bell gets the kind of support she so generously gives to others.

'In the Pink' campaign
Merchant's Square retail businesses on Ghent Road in Fairlawn have been so inspired by Akron male breast cancer survivor Lee Giller that they have joined him and his family in their fund-raising campaign for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
Giller participated in a recent three-day, 60-mile breast cancer walk in Cleveland and plans to do the same in November in San Diego.
Retailers are launching quite a creative ''In the Pink'' campaign during October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The salute to Giller and other breast cancer survivors Oct. 18-20 will feature special promotions, discounts, the sale of pink-ribbon merchandise, raffles and light refreshments. Participating vendors, hanging a pink ribbon outside their establishments, include the Acorn, Christopher's, City Laundry, Coco's, D'Ora, Distinctions, Georgie of Paris, Savile Lane and Scott's Custom Jewelers.
Here's what's planned:
City Laundry will donate $1 for any pink garment brought in to be dry cleaned.
Coco's will sell tickets for a special discount on purchases.
Savile Lane will raffle off a custom-made suit valued at up to $500 and donate $5 for every shopper trying on clothes in the dressing room.
Scott's Custom Jewelers will donate 25 percent of sales on any sterling silver purchase.

''Laughter really is the shortest distance between two hearts,'' she often says.
