Akron General, Akron Global Business Accelerator will collaborate on medical-related development

Akron General Medical Center and the Akron Global Business Accelerator will work together to attract, develop and grow young biomedical companies.
The collaboration is the latest step in strengthening the identity of the Akron Biomedical Corridor, a swath of land surrounding Akron's downtown hospitals that's being targeted for medical-related development.
A memorandum of understanding between Akron General's Office of Technology Transfer, Commercialization and Innovation and Akron's business incubator hopes to generate more opportunities for local companies to research, develop and test medical products and services.
''They have the technology and we have the expertise to help them move the technology from the laboratory to the marketplace,'' said Terry Martell, director of operations and business development for the incubator.
James Dougherty, Akron General's research and medical education chairman, said the agreement should help ''attract companies to the Akron area and develop the region as a hub for the development of biomedical products and services.''
The institutions plan to cooperate on several levels, including assessment and research activities, lectures, public seminars and sharing of experiences, and joint promotional activities.
Michael Lehere, the incubator's chief executive, sees the partnership as a ''catalyst for innovation'' and a way to speed up commercialization of technologies in the Akron Biomedical Corridor.
In the first action resulting from the agreement, the incubator will join the Wound Healing Research and Education Consortium, a group of local universities and hospitals looking for ways to bring new wound care technology to market.
