Man arrested in two deaths

Police say fatal shootings result when drug deal goes bad

By Bill Lilley
Beacon Journal staff writer

A Youngstown man was to be arraigned this morning on two counts of aggravated murder for a double shooting in East Akron on Tuesday night.

Marquez B. Perry, 18, was arrested by Akron police at about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

He is accused of killing Scott E. Smith, 33, of Akron, and Tammy S. Dickey, 30, of North Lima, during what police said was a botched drug deal.

Police said Smith, who lived in the 400 block of South Arlington Street, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found in the parking lot of Lisa's Cabaret at 1004 E. Market St. at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken by paramedics to Akron City Hospital, where he died at 10:17 p.m.

Dickey was found inside a red 1997 Chevrolet Blazer parked at East Market Auto Sales at East Market and Seiberling streets, about five blocks east of Lisa's Cabaret, police said. She also sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:39 p.m. by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

In addition to the aggravated
murder counts, Perry has been charged with aggravated robbery and two counts of tampering with evidence.

He was booked into the Summit County Jail and his arraignment was set for 9 a.m. today in Akron Municipal Court.

''It was a drug deal gone bad,'' said Lt. Rick Edwards, spokesman for the Akron Police Department. ''Tammy Dickey and Marquez Perry came from Youngstown together to buy drugs — about a pound of marijuana.''

Edwards said Dickey and Perry apparently met Smith in the parking lot of Lisa's Cabaret shortly before 9 p.m.

Smith had been arrested on drug charges four times between February 1996 and June 2000, Edwards said. He also had a record of other crimes, including falsifying information and probation violation.

Perry apparently robbed Smith and then shot him, Edwards said.

Witnesses told police that Smith's body was thrown out of the Blazer onto the parking lot at Lisa's Cabaret and the vehicle then sped away.

Police said Perry and Dickey then went to the parking lot at East Market Auto Sales, where she was shot.

Two 9 mm handguns were found by police across East Market Street in a snow-covered area in the Market Street Muffler parking lot.

Police do not believe there are more suspects in the shootings.

''We don't think there are any more,'' Edwards said, ''but you can't rule anything out. We are still investigating.''

Edwards said the deaths of Smith and Dickey represent the first two homicides in Akron in 2008. There were 23 deaths listed as homicides in Akron in 2007.
