Veteran defensive end still has plans to play

Defensive end Orpheus Roye, a starter for all of his eight seasons in Cleveland, had his contract terminated by the Browns Wednesday.
But his agent said Roye, 35, has no plans to retire after consulting noted orthopedist James Andrews.
''He's going to play,'' agent Philip C. Williams said. ''He played hurt this year and if you watch the film he played well. He should be pain-free. Dr. Andrews said his knee looked very sound. He rushed it back or we might not be having this conversation.''
The 12-year veteran had a year remaining on his contract that would have paid him $3 million. Roye played in 13 games in 2007 despite missing much practice time after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Aug. 2. He had 34 tackles and a half sack.
Last week at the NFL Combine, Browns General Manager Phil Savage hinted Roye's future with the Browns was in doubt.
''Orpheus has been a mainstay for the Browns since 2000 with his reliable play and overall dependability,'' Savage said in a statement. ''A professional in every sense of the word, these are the kinds of decisions that make this a difficult time of year.''
Roye started 101 out of 113 games for the Browns and had 486 tackles (295 solos) and 91/2 sacks. His best season was 2005, when he finished with a career-high 95 tackles.
A sixth-round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1996, Roye spent his first four years with the Steelers.
