He will announce Tuesday his pick for Summit chairman

Some people are literally making bets on the identity of state Sen. Kevin Coughlin's suggested candidate to replace Summit County Republican Party Chairman Alex Arshinkoff.
Many think Coughlin will go with Akron attorney Don Varian. Some speculate that Coughlin, who has denied any interest, has his eyes on the post himself. Still others think someone unexpected will step forward.
The speculation will end Tuesday afternoon, when Coughlin will hold a news conference to reveal the person he has in mind at 2 p.m. in the John S. Knight Center rotunda, 77 E. Mill St., Akron.
Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, is trying to unseat Arshinkoff by gaining a majority on the party's central committee. He claims he has the numbers with the results of the central committee contests in the March 4 primary. Arshinkoff and other party leaders, however, say Coughlin doesn't have the majority he needs.
The central committee's organizational meeting will be scheduled after the Summit County elections board certifies the results of the March election, which will be done in mid-April.
Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, recently put Varian on the elections board to replace Arshinkoff, who she said wasn't ''fit'' to serve. The party, which had sug
gested former Hudson City Council President Brian Daley as Arshinkoff's replacement on the board, is challenging Brunner's decision in the Ohio Supreme Court.
When asked about the news conference Sunday, Varian said, ''Stay tuned.''
He declined further comment, except to predict that it will be ''an interesting news conference.''
''I hope to be there,'' he said.
Varian hasn't ruled out the possibility of trying for the chairmanship. He had said he and Coughlin wanted to wait to see the results of the March election before announcing a chairman candidate.
Coughlin couldn't be reached for comment Sunday. His brief news release didn't reveal the identity of the prospective chairman.
