Akron incubator captures national award

Tenant takes second for outstanding technology client

By Paula Schleis
Beacon Journal business writer

For 25 years, the Akron Global Business Accelerator has been a rather quiet force for economic development in Northeast Ohio.

But the national spotlight found it on Tuesday.

The facility won the 2008 Incubator Innovation Award from the National Business Incubation Association at the organization's annual conference in San Antonio, Texas.

And one of the incubator's tenants — Summit Data Communications — took second place for Outstanding Incubator Client in the technology category.

The announcement was made at a luncheon with about 700 people representing 45 countries, said the incubator's director of operations, Terry Martell.

Martell, the incubator's Chief Executive Officer Mike LeHere, and Director of Entrepreneurial Services Jerry Lesnick were there to accept the award, which praised the incubator's ''Global Technology Commercialization Initiative.''

The initiative focuses on the development of technology-based innovation through new domestic start-up firms and the attraction of foreign firms in key sectors.

Akron's Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Bob Bowman, said the goal of attracting foreign companies is about to be fulfilled with a new tenant from Israel and possibly another from Germany.

Rather than abandon the past, the incubator is helping the city and region transition to a new knowledge-based economy, Bowman said.

One example of the new economy is Summit Data, recognized for the success of its wireless radio card business.

The 2-year-old company already has an annual revenue of $7 million, selling special cards for mobile devices in challenging environments.
