Medina County won't land Cabela's store anytime soon

Retailer cuts back on openings because of sluggish economy

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

Cabela's, the national hunting and fishing retailer, won't open a store in Medina County anytime soon.

The Nebraska-based company is cutting back on store openings due to the sluggish economy, spokesman John Castillo said Friday.

''Given today's uncertain retail climate, we felt it was best to manage our retail expansion consistent with the economic climate,'' he said.

After opening eight new stores last year, the company has plans for only two this year in Maine and South Dakota; and two next year in Montana and New Jersey.

Medina County and Brunswick officials announced last year that they were negotiating with Cabela's for a store near Interstate 71 and state Route 303. The company never confirmed a deal, but local officials said Please see Cabela's, A7

they expected a store to open in 2009.

Brunswick City Manager Robert Zienkowski said local officials are continuing to talk with the company and are now hoping for a 2010 or 2011 opening.

''We've never stopped having conversations with them at all,'' he said, adding that he understands the project is dependent on the economy. ''We're still optimistic that a store will be there.''

Castillo declined to comment on a potential store in Brunswick.

Cabela's has no stores in Ohio, but the company remains interested in the state, he said. The nearest stores are in Dundee, Mich., and Wheeling, W.Va.

''Ohio is definitely a state of interest for Cabela's and we continue to review potential sites on an ongoing basis,'' Castillo said.

Cabela's calls itself ''the largest mail-order, retail and Internet outdoor outfitter in the world.'' Its giant stores are considered tourist destinations and include animal displays, hunting and fishing exhibits, restaurants and aquariums.

Local officials had estimated a Brunswick store would attract about 3 million visitors annually — with half coming from more than 100 miles away — and have revenue of more than $50 million annually.
