Neighborly behavior is theme

Plusquellic asks residents to get to know each other next Saturday in Akron

By Marilyn Miller
Beacon Journal

Akron will have its second annual Neighbors Day next Saturday.

Under the theme ''Living Together Better,'' Mayor Don Plusquellic is asking residents to take time out from their busy schedules between noon and 6 p.m. to get to know their neighbors.

''In the so-called good ol' days, before cell phones and air-conditioning and the things we enjoy in our everyday lives,'' Plusquellic said at a news conference Friday, ''there was something back in the day that was very good for most people, and that is we got to know our neighbors. It was something people used to do naturally.''

He said good neighbors notice when something is wrong — like a strange truck pulling into the driveway and loading up furniture or when mail or newspapers are piling up.

''By knowing your neighbors better,'' he said, ''you are becoming the eyes of the police department. Know your neighbors and a safer community will follow.''

A list of suggested activities for next Saturday can be found on the Web site http://www.neighborsdayakron.org. Some of these include inviting neighbors over for tea or coffee, or having a cookout, potluck picnic or ice cream social.

If neighbors want to have a block party or host games or sports for neighborhood children and need part of the street closed, they can call 311, the city of Akron's Information Center, between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to register the event. The city will provide yard signs and additional bags for trash pickup.
