Akron player is expelled

Sophomore Rydell Brooks, facing charges in shooting, is out of university

Carl Chancellor
Beacon Journal staff writer

The University of Akron basketball player charged in an off-campus shooting with police has been expelled by the university.

A hearing on the status of Rydell Brooks, 20, a UA sophomore and nonscholarship player on the Zips men's basketball team, was held this week, and it was determined that he would be permanently removed from campus.

He had already been removed from the basketball team by the school's athletics department.

Brooks, who is in the Summit County Jail in lieu of a $1 million bond, is facing charges of attempted murder, felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Last month, Brooks and a second man, Edward Davis Jr., 20, were taken into custody after a confrontation with police during a traffic stop.

Police spokesman Lt. Rick Edwards said that when police approached a minivan on Bellows Street, shots were fired at them.

Police said Brooks, a 2006 graduate of Buchtel High School, fled from the minivan but was caught a block away.

No one was injured in the gunfire.

Edwards said police did not return fire.

Five guns, two ski masks and gloves were found inside the minivan, Edwards said.

Davis also was charged with attempted murder, felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon. He also is being held in the county jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
