NEW FRANKLIN

Prison for car crash
NEW FRANKLIN: A Plain Township man was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison for two counts of aggravated vehicular assault and drunken driving in a crash that struck a sheriff's deputy and a 17-year-old girl.

Nathan R. Wechter, 22, of Fox Run Avenue NW, pleaded guilty to the offenses last month and was sentenced by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Judith Hunter. His driver's license was suspended for eight years.

Investigators from the State Highway Patrol said Wechter drove off the right side of Turkeyfoot Lake Road in New Franklin about 12:10 a.m. May 25 and struck a sheriff's cruiser before hitting deputy Rob Alderman.

Wechter's car then went through a yard and across a driveway, striking two parked cars and the girl, patrol investigators said.

Prosecutors said both victims were injured and required surgery.

Authorities said a breath test taken shortly after the crash showed Wechter's blood-alcohol content was 0.28 percent, more than three times the state limit to be considered intoxicated.
