Police arrest slain North Canton's man's neighbor in connection with electric box damaged Sept. 30

A North Canton resident who lived one block from a man who was found beheaded Saturday was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with vandalizing his dead neighbor's electric meter box in the Evergreen Mobile Home Complex.
William D. Perry, 41, was arrested at 1:14 a.m. at the Canton Police Department by North Canton police and charged with felony vandalism. ''A warrant was issued Monday and [Perry] was picked up in Canton by Canton police,'' North Canton Police Chief Michael Grimes said.
Perry lives at 94 Cedar St. N.W.
He is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. today in Canton Municipal Court. Brett W. Smith, who was found decapitated in the bathroom of his mobile home, lived alone at 81 Balsam St.
Bond was set at $150,000 for the fourth-degree vandalism felony, and Perry was taken to Stark County Jail.
Grimes said Smith's electric meter box was smashed on Sept. 30, but the chief would not comment on whether the vandalism and the death were thought to be related.
He said he could not release any more details because the investigation into Smith's death is ongoing.
The body of Smith, a 1993 Lake High School graduate, was found shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday by his mother, Judy Smith of Hartville.
Judy Smith said she and a neighbor broke into Brett's mobile home to check on him after several attempts to reach him throughout the day had failed.
A spokeswoman for the Stark County Coroner's Office said an autopsy on Smith was not completed by Tuesday evening.
North Canton police said in a report that Smith's death was being investigated as a homicide. The report says an ''unknown person entered residence, committed murder and set a fire.''

Does this guy work for the Barberton Fire Department? I hear they are real good at taking electric meters when they aren't supposed to. Call there and talk to Chris Hoxworth. He'll tell you about how he cut the electric to several homes in Barberton during a massive rainstorm and by doing so, he cut the electric to their sump pumps and destroyed these homes. In the end, the city failed to take responsibility for the damages.
Meter damaged to cover up time of crime.
The guy has his head cut off and they are worried about vandalism to a meter? Great detective work there barney.
Yeah, that is a bit absurd!

Oh by the way, his head was cut off."
Maybe they are using that charge to hold the person responsible....
Oh yeah, that's a good point when you consider the bond that was set.
the man brett smith is my cousin and i would appreciate it if people that are commenting on this matter would be a little bit more tasteful in what you say. as i have read some terrible comments on here. please just be considerate. thank you
