County leaders plan trip to India

Trade mission hopes to persuade companies to set up facilities here

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

A group of Summit County leaders are going to India late next month on a two-week trade mission, hoping to convince some Indian companies to set up shop here.

It's the first such economic delegation from Ohio traveling to India, according to the Summit County Mayors Association, which is sponsoring the trip.

''We're pathfinders,'' Stow Mayor Karen Fritschel said Thursday. ''We're hoping to increase economic development opportunities in Summit County.''

In addition to Stow, leaders from Akron, Hudson, Macedonia, Twinsburg, Lakemore and Summit County will make the trip, scheduled for Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.

They will visit Mumbai, Ahmedabad, New Delhi and Bangalore, where they will attend the Industrial Automation Trade Fair.

''Will I come back with a company?'' Macedonia Mayor Donald Kuchta asked. ''I don't know. But will I plant a seed? You bet.

''This is fantastic. It shows that we're willing to reach out to India and try to get them to outsource here,'' he added, referring to jobs leaving the U.S. for India.

The Summit County contingent will encourage stronger business relationships between Northeast Ohio and India, the
second-most populous country in the world; promote Ohio products and services; and seek Indian investment here.

The mission will focus on the automotive, plastics, alternative energy, and automation, instrumentation, controls and electronics industries.

Last year, Cleveland-based SGI Global Business Advisors LLC, which is helping organize the visit, hosted a group of Indian business leaders from Gujarat. That group visited Cleveland, Akron, Beachwood, Stow and Twinsburg.

Participants expressed a desire to establish offices and facilities here, Fritschel said.

''Why not Northeast Ohio?'' she said.

The mayors association is paying for half the trip. Communities are seeking sponsors and using other funds so taxpayer money isn't being spent, Kuchta said. For example, Plastic Process Equipment of Macedonia is helping fund his trip, the mayor said.

Okay, Now where does the Summit county Mayor's association get their money? From dues? Are the taxpayer's paying the dues?

The Taxpayers pay for the Mayors Assoc fees aka the Taxpayers are paying! Do they really think the general public is this stupid to think otherwise? Hmm, do the Mayors plan on taking two weeks vacation time away from the job? I think we pay their salaries when they are taking vacation time. How come they don't go on there own personal time...This trip is not cheap how about saving jobs locally first!

Are you kidding me, India will never put a business in Akron unless they have a lot to gain, what sort of incentives will you give them? I am sure our gov't will make them a better offer than they would an American business. It is all so out of hand, first we move all of our business out of the country, then we ask them to move their business to our country, well along with the business they will probably ship their people over her to, to work the business. They do not sell their own out like Americans do. We are destroying ourselves.

Gee...another junket at taxpayers expense. I'm sure there is just a million things the Indians can teach us. Yeah right!
