Stark woman in Marines dies in Iraq

Circumstances are unclear

By Katie Byard
Beacon Journal staff writer

A 22-year-old Stark County woman serving in the Marines died Sunday in a noncombat-related incident in Iraq.

Stacy Ann Dryden, a lance corporal, died at the al-Asad air base, said Midge King, a family spokeswoman.

The military notified family members Sunday of Dryden's death at the base in western Iraq.

King, a cousin of Dryden's, said the family is ''not sure yet'' how Dryden died.

Dryden, who lived in Plain Township, had been in Iraq for less than two months, after enlisting in the Marines in 2007.

''She thought the Marines were the most challenging of all the services,'' King said. ''She always wanted to try new things.''

Dryden also ''wanted to make something of her adult life,'' King said.

After graduating from GlenOak High School in 2004, Dryden worked at a fast-food restaurant and a few other jobs.

''It just wasn't a challenge enough for her,'' King said.

King said family members ''supported her [decision to enlist] completely.''

Dryden was the daughter of Thea Dryden and Ronald Dryden.

Thea Dryden wrote on an online social networking Web site: ''R.I.P. my beautiful daughter, my fiery angel, my Marine. You are loved so much Annie. I know you are watching over your brother and I. God I love you!!''

Friends and family members dubbed Dryden ''Fiery Angel,'' King said, ''because she was so sweet looking and she was a sweet girl, unless you got on her bad side.''

Recalling Dryden's ''beautiful singing voice,'' King said Dryden sang for her unit in Iraq.

Fellow Marines were so impressed, they encouraged her to enter an upcoming talent contest, King said.

Dryden sang in the choir at GlenOak, where she also was a cheerleader.

Her brother, Jake, is a junior and football player at GlenOak.

A moment of silence in Dryden's honor will be observed before the GlenOak-Perry High School football game Friday night. The game will be at Bob Commings Field at GlenOak.

RIP - it's so sad so many of our young people have died in Iraq since 2003 over a war that did not have to happen that was started by lies about WMDs by Bush and Cheney. It's time to bring the troops home and soon. Thank God Obama will do that starting January 20, 2009 when he takes over the WH.

You can't be in the United States Senate and NOT know anything about foreign policy, besides, Joe Biden knows quite a bit about foreign policy. Obama/Biden in 2008.

"... a war that did not have to happen that was started by lies about WMDs by Bush and Cheney."

People can write inaccurate statements like this all they want. It's a free country. But writing it over and over will not turn it into fact.

It was the CIA and other "intelligence" orgs which reported the WMD risks. Blaming Bush and Cheney for "Lies" is about as valid as blaming the media or OMG for the WMD reports.

Where did those Iraqi ships go? The ones which were spotted leaving the Iraq harbor loaded with hastily loaded equipment and materials right before the deadline for disclosure compliance? I heard it on NPR - once.

My prayers are with this family, and other families who have also lost love ones in this war.

The only thing I am going to say is I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WOULD EVEN CONSIDER PUTTING CROOKED McCAIN AND CROOKED PALIN INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. YOU OBVIOUSLY LIKE SPENDING YOUR MONEY ON BUYING HER CLOTHES.

Oh, God please help "OLDMANGRUMP" get over himself. You don't know anything about Gov't intell and what information people have to work with in that position. All you do is listen to broadcasters who parrot everything you wanna hear. The same with Bonnie and Wilma. McCain and Palin are not crooks and Obama is not a terrorist. I will be voting for McCain but not because of stories that are not true or that are blown up in the media, but because their policies and ideas are what I believe are best for this nation in comparison to Obama's. Stop listening and regurgitating every crazy story you hear on the news. Use your brain and don't hate on people. This Marine died doing what she loved...serving her country and fellow Marines. Don't blame her death or any other on the Pesident or vice president. Don't cheapen what she sacrificed for her country... and don't tell those of us in the military that you "Support the troops but not the war." that is crap! You cannot support us without supporting our mission because we are our mission. We place our mission first and you cannot separate us from it! Support our mission or get out of our way. Save your political whining for after we win and come home! then you can bicker and debate who did what wrong and we then can learn from it. All you do is undermine our morale when you trash our mission and our Commander in Chief!
If you aren't for our success and our mission then you are against us! Period!

RIP Marine and stand tall as you now guard the streets of Gold.

The Leathernecks Motorcycle Club GOLD STAR Chapter was proud to attend the services. L/Cpl Stacy "Annie" Dryden made the world a better place - just as with all the Marines who have invested their eternity in bettering the world. I have met the family and they are patriots and I noted that the women are especially fierce. The only political comment here is the one made by Annie - she supported the war, her president, her Corps, her country and her family. Any other comments may serve your own selfish interests but pale in the shadow of a person like Annie.

I'd like to first express my heartfelt sorrow to the family of this young woman. Be PROUD because she was what others can only dream of being. And for those of you who siezed this opportunity to spout off your politics - shame on you. You tell how this person is going to do this and this person is to blame for that, but what are you doing? Talking - that's what you are doing. You are looking for someone to follow and someone else to blame. You don't even see that the site you are on is about a young woman who wasn't talking, she was doing. She wasn't looking for someone to follow, she was leading. She wasn't looking for someone to blame, she was standing up for what she believed in. What did you do today?
So now I say Good Night Annie, I will meet you in due time. I will be easy to spot, I will be one of the few that will be able to look you in the eye when we meet. Semper Fi. Brian - Leathernecks MC

To the family of "Annie", my heartfelt sympathy for your loss. It is very clear by your words just how proud you were and still are of her. God Bless you all and give you comfort and strength in the days that lie ahead.

To the individuals who's comments revolved around POLITICS ..... Shame on you!

To Drew...Tim...Brian: BRAVO! Comments spoken like true gentlemen(first) and true Marines(always)!
