The East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp. energy service department wants you to know there is winter help for those in financial distress: its free Home Weatherization Assistance program.
''In addition to attic and sidewall insulation and air-sealing measures, [the program] provides a limited number of furnace and hot water heater replacements to income-eligible households,'' said an agency spokeswoman.
The weatherization program serves both homeowners and rental properties.
Yet another remedy for folks in need is the Electric Partnership Program, which is designed to improve the electric efficiency of low-income households.
''Eligible households may receive new energy-efficient refrigerators and freezers,'' the spokeswoman said. ''Homes with electric heat may have thermal energy-efficiency measures installed.''
Income eligibility is based on 150 percent of the federal poverty level — a family of two must have a gross income at or below $21,000, and a family of four, $31,800.
For information, please call Energy Services at 330-773-2095 or toll free at 866-604-6844.
'Star of Wonder'
The Akron Chapter of the Christ Child Society will present its 39th annual Christmas boutique, Star of Wonder, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn hotel, 3180 W. Market St., Fairlawn.
The boutique will be awash with all manner of handcrafted items by local artisans, a bake shop and Grandma's Treasures.
There also will be a style-show luncheon (reservations are a must at $25), with fashions from Coldwater Creek.
However, the star raffle attraction will be the star quilt wall hanging fashioned by Akron's Elaine Urban, who put in untold hours and won second place at the recent Stan Hywet Stitchery Showcase.
Other prizes include elegant and casual dining certificates. Proceeds benefit the Christ Child Society of Akron and its Clothing Center, which benefits so many in our community.
''Members helped more than 1,400 area children last year, collecting and distributing clothing in cooperation with Akron Public Schools,'' writes society spokeswoman Diana Herhold.
For information, please call Pat Donnelly at 330-762-0518.
Auction of Hope
Cassidy's Hope Foundation will present its second annual Auction of Hope at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Medina Eagles Club banquet facility, 696 Lafayette Road, Medina.
The foundation celebrates the life of 12-year-old Cassidy Erin Jackson, who lost her two-year cancer battle in 2006. The nonprofit coordinates with Akron Children's Hospital to support and aid families with children diagnosed with cancer.
There's lots planned at this event — silent and live auctions with vacation getaways, sports collectibles, household items, hot-air balloon rides and more; raffles; 50/50 raffles; door prizes; and a cash bar.
Tickets at $25 are limited.
For tickets, please call Pam Czech (Cassidy's mother) at 330-483-3232 or Jennifer Dixon at 440-212-9029. Checks should be made payable to Cassidy's Hope Foundation, and mailed to P.O. Box 434, Valley City, OH 44280.
