Fire department gets specially designed oxygen masks for dogs and cats

WADSWORTH: City firefighters and medics have a new tool to help pets rescued during fires — specially designed oxygen masks.
Invisible Fence West in North Olmsted donated four kits containing multiple masks to the department Thursday.
Fire Chief Ralph Copley welcomed the donation, saying it will be easier for firefighters to use the pet masks than improvising with ones built for humans.
''These will be a lot more efficient,'' he said.
Invisible Fence estimated that more than 40,000 pets died in fires in 2006 — most from smoke inhalation. The company has made 70 similar donations throughout Northeast Ohio, spokesman Justin Henry said.
Knowing how attached people are to their animals, firefighters always take care in trying to save them, too, and the new masks will be helpful, Copley said.
The reusable masks come in various sizes for dogs, and there is one for cats and other small animals, too. They are shaped to fit over a dog or cat's face, as opposed to a human's. Each kit is valued at $60.
Firefighters and medics will be trained in how to use them, Copley said.
Maggie, a 9-year-old golden retriever, allowed firefighters to try out a mask Thursday at Fire Station No. 2 on Weatherstone Drive.
''This fits on nicer and is easier to assemble,'' firefighter/medic Shawn LaBelle said.

what a great idea
AFD had those donated last year sometime...but I havent had the chance to try them out yet. We carry them on all the ladder trucks in the city. It was too hard before to try to administer oxygen with an adult oxygen mask....
Kudos to the company donating these!
