Lakemore police say man killed his wife in standoff

Officers shoot estranged husband holding 4-year-old son hostage in home. Boy safe

By Phil Trexler
Beacon Journal staff writer

LAKEMORE: A nearly eight-hour standoff with police ended Thursday night with a Lakemore woman dead and her estranged husband shot.

The couple's 4-year-old son, who had been held hostage by the father in the home's basement, was unharmed.

Police along with Metro SWAT officers surrounded the Martha Avenue home after the husband's sister called police around 3:30 p.m. to report a domestic dispute at the house.

The couple's two daughters came home from school during the standoff and were safely escorted from the scene.

Police Chief Kenneth Ray said Daniel C. Tice, 32, shot and killed his wife, Brandi, 28, inside the home.

Several hours into the standoff, Ray said, officers entered the home and found the wife's body.

They continued to negotiate with Daniel Tice before shooting him around 10:40 p.m. In an effort to subdue the father, Ray said, they shot him twice with nonlethal beanbags.

''It knocks most people down,'' the chief said. ''But he is a good-sized man and with his state of mind, it did not move him.''

Ray said Daniel Tice made a move toward his shotgun and a SWAT officer shot him at least once in the head.

Daniel Tice was taken to an undisclosed Akron hospital. The son was taken to Akron Children's Hospital for observation.

Lakemore Mayor Michael Kolomichuk said a SWAT team negotiator tried to talk the husband into surrendering.

''Thank God the little boy is safe. That was our main concern,'' he said.

Ray said the wife had told her husband that she wanted a divorce. Authorities said the husband has a history of domestic violence incidents in Springfield Township.

The chief said his department has only been summoned to the couple's Lakemore home once, and that incident did not involve a domestic violence case.

Neighbor Gwynn Davis, who lives nearby across the street, said the area is usually quiet.

Davis said she did not know the Tice family who purchased their home in 2006. ''We've heard him [Daniel Tice] be verbally abusive to his children,'' she said.
