As snow continues to pile up outside, the National Weather Service is reporting that between 4 and 7 inches have fallen in the region.
Freezing rain and sleet that caused early morning traffic woes turned back into snow by midmorning. But snow-covered roads continued to plague motorists into the afternoon.
Graduation ceremonies at the Akron Alternative Academy have been rescheduled from tonight to 7 p.m. Feb. 4, said Karen Ingraham, executive director of communications for Akron Public Schools.
Also, the Multicultural Workshop at Kenmore High School scheduled for tomorrow has been canceled, she said.
All University of Akron campuses are closed, said university spokesman Ken Torisky.
Kent State University canceled classes at the main campus beginning at 11 a.m. and all KSU branches are closed. Staff is expected to report at all branches except in Kent and at the Trumbull County campus.
The Akron Art Museum is also closed today because of the weather, said Elizabeth Wilson, director of marketing communications.
The Akron Zoological Park is also closed today said David Barnhardt, director of marketing.
All Akron-Summit County public libraries will close at 2 p.m. today, said marketing director Carla Davis.
Ohio Department of Motor Vehicle customers are advised that many of the locations across the state may be closed or offering limited services today due to the snowstorm. Customers are urged to call ahead to make sure the exam stations and deputy registrar officers are open.
Offices in the Barberton Municipal Building will close at 11 a.m. today and the Municipal Court will close at 2 p.m., said Mayor Bob Genet.
The Master Gardeners of Summit County, scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Sand Run Metro Park, has been canceled.
In North Canton, the special City Council meeting and the Community Improvement Corporation meeting scheduled for tonight have been canceled.
The City of Twinsburg Fitness Center advisory board meeting scheduled for this evening is canceled.
Northfield Park has canceled live racing tonight. The track will remain open for simulcasting.
Read a list of area closings here.
A snow emergency has been issued by Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander. Roadways are hazardous and only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be on the roadways. Wayne County Sheriff's Department has also gone to a Level 2 emergency, cautioning residents to stay off the roads and to call workplaces to see if they must report today.
If you must report to work, the Ohio Department of Transportation is cautioning motorists to plan on a commute twice as long as usual this morning.
The Summit-Stark post of the State Highway Patrol is advising motorists to avoid any routes with hills or slight inclines.
In particular, state Route 21 from Navarre to the Stark-Tuscarawas county line was blocked by two tractor-trailers, and traffic was backed up at least a mile this morning. A dispatcher advised motorists this morning to also avoid U.S. Route 30 from East Canton to Minerva and state Route 43 in Stark County.
By 7 a.m., Akron police reported several fender-benders, but a dispatcher said accidents are occurring across the region and no one area is worse than any other.
The National Weather Service is predicting another 3 to 5 inches of snow on top of what was already on the ground this morning.

Emergency parking bans have been issued in Akron, Barberton, Brunswick, Cuyahoga Falls, Kent, Stow and Wadsworth and Hinckley and Lake townships.
All cars left on streets in the designated areas may be impounded and owners could be subject to fines.

Ah,the joys of living up North where you get about 3 days of summer.
Former Akronite,Kenmore and KSU grad.

Port Saint Lucie ,Fl.
It makes you appreciate those 3 days all the more. I enjoy 4 distinct seasons, and I'm usually ready to leave Florida after the 7th day of spring break. (Though I do wish Publix would build some stores here!) Enjoy!
I'm not sure where you're at Kathy.
It's still snowing in Akron...
Posted at 8:51 am
and the guy in charge of Barberton schools has told all administrators to report no matter what the weather...even drag their kids in if they have to...i thought they closed because it was unsafe to be on the roads
Where are the snow plows & salt trucks? Tallmadge hasn't seen any yet this morning.
Stopped? Really? There has been 1" fall and accumulate since 7:00am.
oldmangrump, they're here on 91, 2 at a time! Not on the side road yet though.
Hey reporter, check out your window. That's unless you are somewhere in the sunny state of another universe. It's snowing in Akron! Learn how to write a good lead paragraph.
"The snow has stopped"?? Not in Montrose. It is coming down fast and furious, and has been for the last several hours.
Kenneth, what are you talking about, only three days of summer? Do you only visit Northern Ohio for three days of the Summer?
Hey Kathy, do they have windows where your at ? It;s snowin like crazy here in B-town !! How can U give out weather conditions ? U people really crank me sometimes. I've been watching it snow since 7 am. No quit in it either....
Yeah, it's still snowing here in Stow too. I was driving to work at 7:46 a.m. when this article was posted and the snow was falling then too....
Snow has stopped? could have fooled me--it's been snowing heavily here in S. Akron for the last hour at least.
Still snowing!
10:20 am....lol
I bet the people at Goodyear had to go to work.
Thank you Cuyahoga Falls Superintendent for closing the Schools at 7:40 am.
A Little late don't you think, perhaps your alarm didn't go off in time?
How many Children were out walking in this mess?
it's still snowing strong in akron....i haven't seen it stop since i've been awake....
Snow is falling at about 1 inch an hour here in Tallmadge still at 10:37am. Stopped - NO !!!
I see the article has been revised a bit. And it's still comin' down!
@ MartiniGal - they didn't cancel school in CF til 7:45?? That's crazy.
AHHHHHHHH...JUST ONE OF THE JOYS OF BEING AN ELDERLY RETIRED PERSON. ONE OF THE NOT SO PLEASANT JOYS IS TRYING TO REMOVE ALL THIS BEAUTIFUL SNOW. I AM BLESSED...I CAN AFFORD TO PAY TO HAVE SNOW REMOVAL...BUT MANY CAN'T! PLEASE HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS...........IT WILL BE A BLESSING TO ALL! THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!
Martini Gal, WKYC said at 6:00 a.m. that Cuyahoga Falls Schools were closed.
Cuyahoga Falls were closed long before 7:30, shame on you for sending your kids out without checking.
If you live in Ohio or any other state that gets snow, these are the days you must be prepared for. Not only snow yet anyone can be at jeporady at any given time, it could be a natural disaster or any kind of diaster! Business'& people alike should prepare ahead. We in Florida stock up on batteries, flashlights, GENERATORS, food, mostly dry goods , water, jugs of water for washing, wet wipes, toys, games for children if you need to go to a shelter. I lived in Ohio for over 40 years & they need to get with the times. People need to STAY HOME!!!!, use you vacation time. If you don't have vacation time, then plan for these days. They will & ARE happening. Bundle in with your neighbors & make the best of it & be glad you are able to take care of yourself. C'mom, this is the year 2009. Get with the times!!Look what happened to that poor 93 year old man from Michigan. There isn't any excuse for that! This is the United States! United we stand!! Help your neighbor, when in doubt, look out for them. call the police & let them check on the elderly. That is what we pay our taxes for. Say you can't afford to take a vacation day or a generator. Boo hoo. give up an evening a month of dining out. give up you cigarettes. give up the booze! give up having a pedicure or your hair done for the month. Give up those extra snakcs that are putting pounds on. Give up something so you can be prepared for these days! We are going to have them!
Kenneth,
3 days of summer, your memory of living in NE Ohio is not very good. We have plenty summer, spring and fall weather. Along with winter. It isn't as hot and muggy as Florida in the summer. And we aren't over crowded with millions of old people and Cubans.
NE Ohio is a nice place. Don't know why you moved, or feel the need to rip on our weather. We'll remember people like you next time a big hurricane hits down there.
@Steve: NE OHIO IS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO LIVE. I LIVED IN FLORIDA FOR 17 YRS AND I'LL TAKE THIS SNOW OVER ANY HURRICANE/TORNADOS FLORIDA GET, PLUS ALL THE BUGS YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH....AND YOU DON'T GET THE MILDEW SMELL IN THE AIR WITH SNOW LIKE YOU CAN WITH THE HEAT IN FLORIDA. I WENT THRU 2 MINOR HURRICANES....I'LL TAKE THE SNOW!
still coming down in downtown akron...has been steadily since 7:30 i've been at work! white out - can't see across rt. 59 from my building.
channel 5 news stated: just in new closing Cuyahoga falls 7:40 am. I didn't send my kids out, because they are out of School hannaman.
Still snowing 1:18 pm
Still snowing here in Hudson at 2:56 pm!! I live in Goodyear Hts and I know it will take me a good 2 hrs to get home!! Not even looking forward to Rt. 8 or 91--I'm sure both will suck at 5:15 tonight!
The Earth has a fever. LOL.
Thought Cuyahoga Falls had the call-ahead system notifying parents when schools are closed!
Got a call this morning @ 6:00 from Dr. Edward Holland telling me that the kids didn't have school. Put down the Martini's.....
Snow down to a light flurry, but still no snowplow trucks seen in my neighborhood of Tallmadge.
retired: yes cuyahoga falls does have a system that calls parents.
If you live in the city of Akron and the following applies read on:Please remove your cars from the side streets if possible!!The plows can't do their job if you leave cars parked in the street!!!! If you parking there as a "convience" then get off the street and in your driveway! I do understand there are exceptions but when we are dealing with this kind of snow those are few and far between. Why does it seem the suburbs I drive through on a regular basis seem to NOT have a problem with this??? It seems every street in Akron with street parking has a problem with big "snow monsters" parked along the curb that never seem to move all winter!!!!So what do you say Akron neighbors will you kindly move your cars into your driveways?
I guess OMG is now the eyes for all of Tallmadge based on his post.
@Martini Gal, schools were closed long before your stated time. Maybe you need to find a new station to watch in the mornings.
I'm thinkin' the hard working plow people are sick of Oldmangrumps' griping and are purposely ignoring his road because the rest of us have our roads plowed continuously! Stop being so grumpy and maybe someone will shovel you out!
I used to live in Kent and I don't know of any better communities than Tallmadge and Kent that keep their roads as clear as possible for the crappy weather we get!
grump wouldn't be happy if his street got hit first
I'm originally from Akron, Graduated Garfield H.S. In 87 I don't miss the winters lol i live in Germany now and the weather is alot like Ohio but it usually lol but in the Heidelberg, Mannheim area we don't get that much snow yuppie lol
that last post i got lost in thought lol sorry for the messed up sentence
It's snowing hard at 9:30 Thursday morning, I can see the frost on my windows and the salt trucks are going down the street. I can't breath because the heat is so high in the house to keep out the cold and I have to miss work because my car won't start, the battery is dead, and the locks are frozen, it must be about 10 degrees with windchill below zero, OH WAIT, I'm waking up from a horrible dream as I roll over and look out my window and see sunshine and blue skies, temps in the low 70's and a perfect day to go to the beach and relax. WOW, what a dream. Glad I'm here in sunny St Cloud Fla.
Tallmadge Mayor Grimm allegedly has promised that Grump will soon see snowplows. When they move all the snow from the streets around his neighborhood to in front of his driveway.
It's Thursday morning and I wish someone would have told Barberton it snowed yesterday because it sure didn't seem like they realized it on State St to Romig. And, to the lady in the silver Toyota 4 wheel drive SUV this morning, hang up the phone and drive!
