Big gift of eggs hatches at food bank

By Bill Lilley
Beacon Journal staff writer

Trucks loaded with surplus food routinely arrive at the docks of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank's warehouse near downtown Akron.

Dan Flowers, the food bank's president and CEO, welcomes every one of them.

And this morning's delivery of nearly 120,000 eggs from Pennsylvania-based Hillandale Farms was a welcome donation as well. But this particular donation struck an ''egg-ceptional'' chord with Flowers.

''This wasn't surplus,'' he said. ''This was something Hillandale Farms just wanted to do because they believe in helping people in need and they believe in what food banks are doing.''

Hillandale Farms, which started in Flushing, Ohio, in 1958 but now is based in North Versailles, Pa., delivered more than 11 skids of eggs.

Each skid contains 30 cases of 30 dozen eggs. That comes out to 9,900 dozen. And that equals 118,800 eggs.

Sauder Farms of Winesburg, Ohio, also contributed 1,800 dozen eggs, which were delivered Tuesday.

That gave the food bank a total of 140,400 eggs — a market value of about $15,000 — to distribute to hungry people that it serves in Summit, Stark, Wayne, Medina, Portage, Carroll, Holmes and Tuscarawas counties.

Hillandale, which bills itself as one of the largest producers/marketers of eggs east of the Mississippi River, also donated 4,500 dozen eggs to the Columbus-area food bank Tuesday.

Today, Hillandale also donated 9,000 dozen to the Cleveland-area food bank, 5,400 dozen to the Youngstown food bank along with the Akron delivery.

All told, that comes to 345,600 eggs donated by Hillandale Farms to agencies in Ohio in less than 24 hours. During a peak sales season.

''The three-week period prior to Easter, along with the three-month baking season prior to Christmas, are our peak seasons,'' said Stow native Kevin M. Patton, the Akron-based salesman for Hillandale Farms.

''We have a lot of chickens in the system, and they are producing a lot of eggs,'' Patton said.

He said eggs are an inexpensive source of protein and are great for kids.

''It's certainly more because the need is so great more than because we had a surplus at this time because it is a peak sales season,'' Patton said, ''but it's also a peak season for unemployment and people in need.''

Patton said Ohio has been ''devastated'' with job losses.

''It's at a critical point and whatever we can do to help the people of Ohio who are in need, we needed to do something,'' he said. ''We're proud to be doing this egg donation to help the people of an area who have been so great to Hillandale Farms.''

Chuck Allen, director of operations for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, said perishable items such as eggs won't stay in the food bank's refrigerated locker very long.

''It will only take about a week to distribute all of the eggs,'' Allen said. ''We'll unload them in the morning, they'll go on the menu later in the morning and will begin to be ordered at 2 p.m. in the afternoon.

''We'll start shipping the eggs out as early as the next day [Thursday] and hungry people will be able to take advantage of this wonderful donation in less than a day.''

There were a total of 1,166,400 eggs donated to the 12 regional food banks in Ohio by Hillandale Farms, Sauder Farms and seven other egg-producing agencies.

Wish I had access to some extra food, but alas- I am one of America's hard working joes, making just enough to be off the list of freebees. I get no food stamps, no free clothes , no free rent, no discounted gas heat. All this does is tick me off . I make about $5.00 too much so Im on my own. When will the citizen, who works hard and pays their OWN bills, get a pat on the back and a hand out??????????????????????

I agree with everyone above. Thank you for doing this! Thank you food banks, all of you, without you I would not have food. I'm the one who used to give to food banks, now I'm on the receiving end and I am so grateful. "Thank you" just doesn't seem enough.

Hillandale and Sauder Farms deserve our support when we go to the grocery store. Great charitable assistance from 2 good companies that probably didn't get (or need) bailout $$$!

I cannot say how happy I am to see such a generous gift to the less fortunate, from a corporate entity at that! All I can say is thank you to these 2 companies for investing in the communities that invest in their product.

Reality demands compliant with realities demands union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America's grandchildren pay for farmers property tax abatement, pay farmers wages, and pay for donors tax refund for their donation of eggs.
To feed unemployed workers, volunteers without wages, and nonunion parasites willing to work for fewer wages than they can afford life.
With money derived from wages or independent business profit!

If I ate eggs, I'd eat Hillandale Farms eggs. But, I'm a vegan. Does anyone have any free tofu to hand out?
