Magical moment for LeBron

By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal staff writer

CLEVELAND: In the NBA, they say that sometimes it just takes a single player and a bunch of role players to get you where you want to go.

No one will ever confuse the Cavs' roster with being a bunch of also-rans, but it took a great pass to one great player for the Cavs to pull out a heart-pumping, 96-95 win over the Orlando Magic to tie the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals at 1-1.

Off a pass from Mo Williams, LeBron James sank the game-winning 3-point shot at the buzzer to send the Cavs off to Orlando for Game 3 with a lot of momentum.

''I'd like to have that last one back,'' Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. ''Hedo [Turkoglu] made a great shot, played last defensive possession as good as he could play. We were looking for back-door lob to LeBron.''

Cavs coach Mike Brown gave James all the credit for the way the play unfolded.

''Hedo took it away and LeBron said 'I'm going to win it,' '' Brown said. ''To be able to take that shot — not many people can do it.''

The Cavs opened with vim, vigor and a sense of urgency, perhaps remembering the folly that Game 1 became on Wednesday night.

They built a 15-5 lead in the game's first five minutes with everyone contributing on offense.

More important, however, is how the Cavs performed on the other end of the floor. Focused on defense, the Cavs held the Magic to 16 points in the first quarter on just 32 percent shooting.

The did it by throwing something different at Magic superstar center Dwight Howard. After the Cavs played Howard man-to-man in Game 1, it was vastly different on Friday night. Every time Howard touched the ball, he found, one, two and, occasionally, three Cavs in his way.

That produced its desired effect — throwing Howard off his game.

Howard, who had 30 points in Game 1, was held to 10. He scored eight points in the first quarter, but just one basket in the second as the Cavs built a lead of as many as 23 points, courtesy of a 13-4 run to open the second quarter. The Magic, sensing things slipping away, rebounded with the help of forward Rashard Lewis, who found his 3-point shot.

Lewis led the Magic with 23 points.

Indeed, it looked like something the crowd at Quicken Loans Arena had seen before and very recently, and the Cavs led just 56-44 at halftime.

Indeed, those in attendance had to get the impression that they were in a perverted version of the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day as the Magic began to eat into the Cavs' lead, just as it unfolded Wednesday.

They made their 3-pointers the easy way as they found soft spots in the Cavs' defense. The Cavs had to do it the difficult way, with James, who finished with a game-high 35 points, whirling, driving and crashing toward the basket to complete a seemingly impossible shot and drawing the foul on two consecutive possessions. He missed the free throw on the first and made it on the second.

The Magic continued shooting their bombs, and they cranked up their defense in the third quarter, holding the Cavs to 35 percent shooting in the quarter. It came at a price, as the Cavs' aggressive play on Howard forced him from the game at 2:22 of the third with his fourth personal foul. Still, the Cavs escaped the quarter with just a six-point lead at 75-69.

The Cavs built the lead to 82-73, but the Magic continued to battle and tied the score at 82 on a layup by guard Courtney Lee.

Williams tied it again at 86, and his 3-pointer a short time gave the Cavs a 89-86 lead.

The Magic again battled back, taking a 95-93 lead on a basket by Turkoglu, who scored 21 points, with one second to go, setting up James' heroics.

Brown was able to joke about it after the game.

''It was just the way we drew it up,'' he said of James' game-winning shot.

What is no joke is the Cavs head to Orlando with the series even, when they could easily be facing an 0-2 deficit.

James knows there is work to do.

''We just couldnt afford to go down 0-2,'' he said. ''That's just a great shot. Now we have to get ready for Game 3. There's a lot to clean up.''

Obviously the Magic will win this series unless the Cavs and Mike Brown pull their heads out of their butts and I can't see it happening. Why in God’s name pull LeBron out in a conference final game? I don’t care if we’re up by 50! The Cavs already lost one in the Q. They should should be up 2-0. Both the Magic and Lackers beat them up in the regular season, do you really think the Cavs can beat em now? "The Shot" was to win the series. This was nothing but a life jacket for them. Before you post something smart about this comment, get off the band wagon and wait until game 3 to see how bad they lose in Orlando! Magic in 5.

That was a great game.

Disappointing that the Magic didn't get 2 wins, but they did take home court advantage from Cleveland.

And you have to wonder about the psyche of a team that needs a last second shot by their superstar to win a game on their own home court where they were invincible all year.

When they won it was like ... OH MY GOSH WE DID IT WE BEAT THE MAGIC!!!

Even talcum powder baby was amazed he made the shot.

CONGRATS TO THE MAGIC - you have shown all who the better team is.

With focus, we can take this series in 5 games. That's my prediction.

They needed a miracle to win one game from the Magic!

Funny stuff there, Dr.

Now let's see a few quotes from the Orlando Sentinel headlines this morning. You know... the professional writers who are paid to provide an at least somewhat objective view of their home team:

"LeBron James rips out Orlando's hearts at buzzer."

"Magic still have long road ahead."

"Heartbreak in Cleveland for the Magic."

"Just Like Mike: LeBron makes dramatic 3 at buzzer to give Cavs 96-95 win over Magic in Game 2."

"LeBron stuns Magic."

"We are all witnesses."

Let's face it. In the span of one second, a man from Akron, Ohio, LeBron James, has transformed the city of Orlando and it's people into the New Cleveland!

I am sick & tired to hearing the media continually call Lebron "The Chosen One" and now they are calling hime The Savior. I guess this means the world as we know it is about to come to a screeching halt because he is going to save us all. Keep religion out of the sports page and only mention it when the day comes.Come to think of it--what team will he be playing for?

No one wants to hear the obvious - the Magic are a better team.

Aren't you all just a little tired of the talcum powder and "witness" routine anyway?

And when your supposed superstar is busy dancing and trying to make 3/4 shots from the ball carrier ... is he really a superstar?

I think not. Where's the Kidz Tunes?

"Williams somehow avoided a technical foul when he threw the ball at Howard after Howard hit Williams on his way to the basket in the first quarter. It was about as obvious a technical foul as there is."

Will someone PLEASE tell Mo that this ball chucking, if called, would have cost the Cavs the game?

1. Mo Williams throwing the ball at Dwight and no technical. That's 1 point.

2. Courtney Lee being called for an offensive charge when he made that tear drop shot. Ben Wallace was up in the air when CLee ran lightly bumped into him. Should of been a no call. It can't be offensive when Ben Wallace was jumping. That's 2 points taken away.

3. Gortat called for the blocking foul on Sasha. He clearly was outside the circle and had his feet set. Sasha makes the basket, Gortat complains and gets a technical. That's 3 points difference.

That's a six point swing.

Those points make a big difference when the Magic lose by one.

You sound like a man who sure is trying hard to convince us all that you got the better team.( 9 comments in a little over an hour) Maybe, maybe but we have a home grown kid and his tough as nails teammates doing amazing things here in N.E. Ohio. And no amount of posts from a fan of a team who took some pretty cheap shots(a hard elbow to the abs to name one) can change that. He's not a meal ticket, he is an inspiration to generations, young and old. He brings a certain pride to all he touches. And Orlando doesn't have the "magic" to match it.

The best part of the game (up until the shot) was Charles Barkley...I can't add, but my peeples can! That was hilarious. Mike Brown Coach of the Year? Up by 23...if it's working don't change it. Cleveland was rolling with Z, V and Lebron on the bench.

@ Dr.

What you fail to realize is that the Cavs could just as easily be up 2-0 as they could be down 2-0 given the close scores. So before you proudly declare the Magic the better team, lets just remember that this is what REAL playoff basketball is like for two teams that are very evenly matched overall.

Hey Dr. it seems you need an anti depressant, those that deem the need to post more than once obviously are unsure of themselves as to what they really believe. It's simple really Dr. These Cavs took your Magic to the wire in game 1, beating them by one in the waning moments after a 9 day layoff. Now we simply returned the favor. Everyone including all beat writers in N.E. Ohio new this Magic team was not an Atlanta or Detroit-everyone knows they are a formidable foe-your team needed 7 games in both series to get to where they are now while the Cavs roared through their 1st 2 and after 9 days rest from each series as I said, it does take time to get back to game speed besides a game mindset, even said, we are tied at 1-a new series! No dis respect to Orlando as they are a great team unlike you.. willing to give the Cavs their due respect-after all this team did have the best record in all of basketball along with considerably the best player in the game which should say something in and of itself. Watch your words Dr. Who as this will go 7 and we'll take it on our home court-sorry, this just ain't your year!

Mike Brown's adjustment double and triple teaming Howard game 2 was commendable. However, his use of zone defense proved the Cavs undoing in both games!
He should have adjusted to man to man defense against Orlando's 3 potent 3 point shooters in game 2! If this adjustment is not seen as necessary and/or not implimented Sunday, the Cavs are doomed! I predict Orlando in 5! The Lakers are doomed as well. Neither James nor Bryant will appear in the finals!

The Cavs could lose if they don't ask "Z" to man up. He has showed that he is afraid of Howard. the worst he could do is block your shot or dunk on you. In the first game Lebron got dunked on 3x. No big deal. Howard had 5 fouls and "Z" would not go in the paint and challenge Howard.
The Cavs have to stop penetration because they don't have help in the paint. The Cavs can't drive to the basket because of Howard's presents. Howard is free to roam because "Z" is 20 feet from the basket looking for a shot. Coach Brown has to play Joe Smith for offense and Wallace for defense.

I know you're riding high on the success of your team. Its obvious that the Magic are not only talented but have a very, very good chance of taking this series from Cleveland. As a Magic fan you have every reason to be confident in the chances of your team.

However, you really start to sound like fuggin' moron when you ride your high horse on the "supposed superstar" comments above. "Supposed?" He was the MVP, put up unbelievable stats this season, and has one of the best IQ's in the game. Don't come at us with that bs because its plain to see you're full of hot air. It WAS a great shot.

LeBron has done more harm than good.

Now, every urban youth is convinced educaton is not needed because they are going to be the next LeBron.

Great post, you are so right! I think it's awesome the way he inspires his team and his fans and young people everywhere. Can't wait till the movie is released in October. Love my TK
